Tequila Express reaches end of the line

Private rail consortium Ferromex and the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce have ended their agreement to operate the weekend Tequila Express tourist train.

The service was suspended in May 2015 to allow Ferromex to refurbish the 17 carriages used on the route.

Jalisco Tourism Secretary Enrique Ramos Flores said the local business chamber is unable to pay the new fees that Ferromex hoped to charge for the use of its infrastructure.

Since last spring, the Chamber of Commerce has been running weekend buses to the San José del Refugio distillery in Amatitán, in place of the train service. The cost has been lowered from 1,350 pesos to 950 pesos.

Meanwhile, the Jose Cuervo Express has been going great guns, even at its steep price of 1,800 pesos per adult ticket.
