New fund established for deported citizens

A fund has been set up to assist migrants in Jalisco, as well as help citizens of this state who have been deported from the United States reintegrate back into society.

The Fondo de Apoyo a los Migrantes will operate in all 125 municipalities of the state and draw on federal funds.  The initial injection of 15 million pesos is earmarked for the operation of shelters for migrants, transportation expenses and the development of projects to enable deported jaliscienses to earn a living.

Around 10,500 migrants have been deported back to Jalisco from the United States in 2016, according to data from the National Immigration Institute (INM).  Returning families may be eligible for up to 75,000 pesos to develop sustainable business projects, said Miguel Castro, director of the Social Integration and Development Secretariat (Sedis).
