May Festival gets on a roll

Grammy Award winning U.S. jazz vocalist and songwriter Gregory Porter opened Guadalajara’s May Cultural Festival last week with two well-attended shows at the Degollado Theater.

With more than 300 separate events, many of them free of charge, the annual festival traditionally showcases a country or region. This year’s ‘guest’ is the State of California and Guadalajara culture aficionados are being thrilled by some of the best talent the ‘Golden State’ has to offer.

Street circus/theater presentations are now also part of the festival. Among artists and groups appearing – many of them from the Canadian province of Quebec – are Throw2Catch, Caberlion Cirque, Les Buffalo Girls, Le Cirque des Curiosité, Satellite Theatre, Makadam Kanibal and Cirque et Productions.

Some of those performances will take place over the weekend:

Friday, May 16. Parque Revolution, 6 p.m.; Estación Juárez/Tren Ligero, 4 p.m.; Plaza Fundadores, 6:30 p.m.; Jardín del Carmen, 7 p.m.; Teatro Degollado Explande, 7:30 p.m.;
