Nation’s most admired dance troupe returns to Degollado stage

The acclaimed Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG) folk dance troupe kicked off its summer season Sunday, July 5 with a fresh program of choreography and music at the Teatro Degollado.

The show starts with several dynamic dances from the state of Veracruz: Cantares Jorochos, La Bruja, El Jarabe Loco and El Palomo.   The 30 dancers then interpret some of Mexico’s most iconic dances, including the Danza de los Concheros, which showcases the country’s pre-Hispanic roots with feathered costumes, indigenous dance steps and drums.  Audiences will also warm to the hilarious Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Old Men), where the dancers wear masks of old people along with their typical campesino garb.

The second part of the show highlights dances and songs (corridos) of the Mexican Revolution, with popular themes such as El Tecolote, La Zenaida and Polino Guerrero.

As always the finale features the famous and invigorating dances of Jalisco, including the emotional La Culebra and Jarabe Tapatio.

Longtime troupe director Carlos Ochoa says the new show is “really dynamic and fluid” and will excite everyone, even patrons who have been to previous performances.

All shows are held on Sundays, beginning at 10 a.m.  Dates are July 13, 20 and 27; August 17 and 24; September 21 and 28; October 5 and 12. Tickets cost from 80 to 350 pesos.
