City’s lavish new arts complex sets February 9 opening

A concert featuring famed operatic tenor Javier Camarena with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra will headline the opening of Guadalajara’s newest performing arts space, the Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco) on Tuesday, February 9. Tickets are priced from 600 to 1,500 pesos.

The inaugural week continues with a show by Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán (550-950 pesos) on Saturday, February 13 and a children’s musical on Sunday, February 14.

Meanwhile, the complex’s museum, gallery and art walk will be inaugurated on February 10 with an opening of an exhibit featuring the work of Sergio Hernandez from Oaxaca and the late British-born artist Leonora Carrington.

The multi-event space in the northern suburbs of the metropolitan area cost 600 million pesos and was funded jointly by the Asociación de Radiodifusoras y Televisoras de Occidente (Radio and Television Association of Western Mexico) and state and federal governments. Construction took seven years to complete.

As well as its 1,963-seat Teatro Moncayo, the complex boasts the 400-seat Sala José Rolón, a 16,000-square-meter congress hall, an exhibition space, radio and television museum, music and dance school, digital center, Walk of Fame, 670 parking spaces and offices. The open-air Foro Sidral can accommodate  4,000 people seated and has space for an additional 2,000 chairs to be brought in.

José Pérez Ramírez, president of Palcco’s administrative committee, said the complex can be used as an alternative venue to Expo Guadalajara for seminars and congresses.

Carlos Linares, vice-president of sales, promised that presentations at Palcco will be priced accessibly.

Other shows planned at in the first half of 2016 include two regular season concerts by the JPO on February 25 and March 3; a puppet presentation for children from March 10-13, the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of  “Siddhartha, the Musical” from April 16-24 and Quebec contemporary circus troupe Les 7 doigts de la main on May 28 and 29.

September will see a production of the opera “La Traviata,” and the Dutch National Ballet will perform  in October. French actor Gerard Depardieu brings a show with “poetry, music and emotion” to Palcco in November.

Palcco is located at Avenida Central 375 in Zapopan, across from the Trompo Magico Children’s Museum.
