The Domingo Lobato Association organ festival, featuring some of Mexico’s most accomplished organists, continues at various Guadalajara churches.

Flamenco

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The first season of 2016 opens with “Music and Painting: Transcendental Arts. Action Painting with artist Tiina Osara.” In the final piece of the program, concert-goers will be able to watch as Finnish artist Osara completes a large-format canvas painting while the orchestra performs composer Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5. Patrick Gallois of France conducts the concert and also performs two flute solos, along with Antonio Dubatovka, the JPO’s principal flautist. As well as the Sibelius finale, the program includes Arturo Rodriguez’s “Mosaico Mexicano,” Franz Doppler’s Concert for Two Flutes and Orchestra and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067.

Free Tuesday Concerts
The Coro del Estado de Jalisco directed by Sergio Hernández kicks off the first Martes de Música y Ópera presentation of 2016 at its new home, the Teatro Alarfie Martin Casillas. The program will include pieces from the operas “Rigoletto” and “Madame Butterfly.” Leonor Montijo (piano) and Alfonso Gonzalez (cello) give a recital on February 9. On February 16, Ricardo Calderon (tenor) and Patricia Perez (soprano) are accompanied by pianist Hector Acosta, interpreting romanzas and zarzuela duets from Spain.

Famed Mexican operatic tenor Javier Camarena with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra headlines the opening of Guadalajara’s newest performing arts space, the Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco). Born in Xalapa, Camarena made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in October 2011 in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” garnering rave reviews. He became only the third singer in the history of the Metropolitan Opera to perform an encore onstage.
