Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil

The Guadalajara Youth Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Guadalajara) celebrates its tenth anniversary with a gala concert at the city’s premier theater.  Works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Revueltas will be included in the program.

Northern Lights

This year’s Northern Lights Festival de Febrero in Ajijic has branched out to include concerts in two venues in the Guadalajara area — the spectacular new Palcco complex on the city’s north side and the centrally located Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. 

Sunday, February 28, 6 p.m. “From Russia with Love.” Mark Skazinetsy directs the entire Festival Orchestra with Australian-born David Fung on piano. The concert includes Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with strings and trumpet and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Palcco Salon Rolon. 150 to 200 pesos.

Tuesday, March 1, 8 p.m. “Improbable Best Friends.” The Manhattan Chamber Players perform a free concert of three works by Brahms and three by Dvorak.  Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. Free.

Wednesday, March 2, 8 p.m. “Broken Hearts and Mad Men.” Singer Patricia O’Callaghan and the Gryphon Trio blend classical music with popular songs from around the world. Palcco, Salon Rolon. 150 to 200 pesos.

 

Contemporary Sounds

Popular contemporary music sessions continue each Monday with indie group Technicolor Fabrics on February 29; folk-rock band Leiden on March 7; and acoustic duet Espumas y Terciopelo on March 14.

Tuesday concerts

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  March 1: “Improbable Best Friends.” The Manhattan Chamber Players perform a free concert of three works by Brahms and three by Dvorak.   March 8: “Four hands” piano recital with Blandine Tricot and Marita Zimmer, featuring works by Mozart, Debussy, Dvořák and Poulenc. March 15: Recital with tenor Hector Valle and baritone Jorge Rubalcava, accompanied by pianist Andrés Sarre. Pieces by Puccini, Donizetti, Rossini, Bizet, Bach, Mozart and others.

Il Divo

Hugely popular multinational classical crossover vocal quartet formed in 2003. Comprised of four male singers: Swiss Urs Buhler, Spaniard Carlos Marin, American David Miller, and Frenchman Sébastien Izambard.

Noel Gallagher’s  High Flying Birds 

One of the brothers from famed U.K. band Oasis (disbanded 2009) hits town with his new outfit, High Flying Birds. With a name inspired by a Jefferson Airplane song, the band has won multiple awards in the United Kingdom since its creation in 2011, many of them for the quality and intensity of their live performances.
