The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!

July 19: Operatic classics, plus romantic Mexican tunes with Monserrat Hernández Zuñiga (soprano), Miguel Frausto (tenor), Jorge Luis Godinez (piano) and Salvador Ramos (bass). July 26: Melodies from La Belle Epoque with Laetitia Grimaldi Spitzer (soprano) and Ammiel Bushakevitz (piano). August 9: Carlos López (baritone), Jorge Jiménez (tenor), Vanessa Jara (mezzosoprano) and Lorena Flores (soprano) are joined by pianist Andrés Sarre to perform famous operatic pieces by Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Massenet, Mozart, Cilea and Ponchielli. August 16: Sopranos Cecilia Ledesma Díaz and Mónica Barbosa Ibarra with pianist Juan Pablo García. August 30: Piano recital by Elena Camarena.

Jazz & art
Opening gala of the Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016, organized by the Instituto de Jazz Tónica, features a visual art performance by “Jazzamoart” (jazz, amor y arte), the pseudonym of Guanajuato artist Javier Vázquez Estupiñán. He will create a painting onstage while being inspired and motivated by music from the Federico Sánchez Quartet.

Fiesta de Jazz
Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016 continues with a “Fiesta de Jazz” featuring a slew of well-known domestic and international artists, including pianist John Beasley, one time accompanist to Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, as well as Toktli, Frost Ensemble, Federico Sanchez Quartet, Carlos Corona Quartet.

GR RECOMMENDS: ‘Amadeus’
“Amadeus,” the play written by Peter Shaffer that was turned into a movie by Milos Forman and won eight Oscars in 1985, will be staged in all its glory at the Teatro Degollado on July 29 and 30.
The acclaimed stage work relates the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by his peer and secret rival Antonio Salieri, who is confined to an insane asylum.
The production, part of the Mexico-Germany Dual Year program, has received a grant of 2.3 million pesos from the federal Culture Secretariat. It’s a labor of love for director Jorge Taddeo, who has been working on the project for around two years. More than 40 artists will take part in the opera, that includes pieces from Mozart classics such as “The Magic Flute,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Cosi Fan Tutte” and “Requiem.”
