Jazz & art

Opening gala of the Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016, organized by the Instituto de Jazz Tónica, features a visual art performance by “Jazzamoart” (jazz, amor y arte), the pseudonym of Guanajuato artist Javier Vázquez Estupiñán.

He will create a painting on stage while being inspired and motivated by music from the Federico Sánchez Quartet.

‘Amadeus’

“Amadeus,” the play written by Peter Shaffer that was turned into a movie by Milos Forman and won eight Oscars in 1985, will be staged in all its glory at the Teatro Degollado on July 29 and 30.  The acclaimed stage work relates the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by his peer and secret rival Antonio Salieri, who is confined to an insane asylum.

Fiesta de Jazz

Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016, organized by the Instituto de Jazz Tónica, continues with a “Fiesta de Jazz” featuring a slew of well-known domestic and international artists, including pianist John Beasley, one time accompanist to Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, as well as Toktli, Frost Ensemble, Federico Sanchez Quartet, Carlos Corona Quartet.

Tonica All-Stars

Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016 closing concert features the “Tonica All-Stars”: Beasley, Hunter and Amendola, as well as Brian Lynch, Ernesto Ramos, Victor Correa, Michael Blake, Ben Shephard, David Leon, Keena Dimick, Lowell Ringel, Kyle Swan. Alexander Alfred, Jonah Udall and Chuck Bergeron.

Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. August 9: Carlos López (baritone), Jorge Jiménez (tenor), Vanessa Jara (mezzosoprano) and Lorena Flores (soprano) are joined by pianist Andrés Sarre to perform famous operatic pieces by Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Massenet, Mozart, Cilea and Ponchielli. August 16: Sopranos Cecilia Ledesma Díaz and Mónica Barbosa Ibarra with pianist Juan Pablo García. August 30: Piano recital by Elena Camarena.

Turn back the clock to hear swing dance melodies from yesteryear.  The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all over the world.

Stomp

Mexican debut for British theatrical sensation that has become a global phenomenon. The performers use their body and everyday objects as percussion instruments to create a physical theatrical experience. Stomp’s New York production passed its 5,000th performance mark in In 2006.

GR RECOMMENDS: US jazz stars 

Jalisco Jazz Festival 2016 features guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Scott Amendola in concert.  Rhode Island-born Hunter plays custom-made seven and eight-string guitars, on which he simultaneously plays basslines, rhythm guitar, and solos.  He has recorded 17 albums.  Amendola is considered one of the leading lights in the San Francisco Bay Area music scene.
