Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free! 

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. August 23: Bosques Umbrosos Quartet, featuring baritone Rami Martínez, playing early music, mainly 15-17th century Spanish.  August 30: Piano recital by Elena Camarena. September 13: Tlalipac chamber orchestra with soprano Natalia Ramos, including well-known pieces by Puccini and Rossini. 

Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. Tuesdays, 8 p.m. Free.

Thursday Dance

Free presentations by contemporary dance groups. August 25: Bailes de salón (son Cubano, danzón, bolero, cha cha cha, mambo, cumbia, salsa).

Mariachi galas

As in past years, the International Mariachi Festival stages nightly galas featuring some of the country’s top mariachi bands: Vargas de Tecalitlán, Nuevo Tecalitlán, Sol de América and América de Don Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar. Accompanied by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, these evenings, while expensive, are emotional experiences and full of color.

Sin Bandera 

Popular Latino pop duo is made up of Mexico’s Leonel García and Argentinean Noel Schajris.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara and Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents Marcus Printup Quintet.

Alejandro Fernandez

Ranchero singer and heartthrob is the son of legendary crooner Vicente Fernandez, but is fast becoming as popular as his “old man.”

Ballet folklorico

Two 50th anniversary shows given by the famed Universidad de Guadalajara troupe.  Should be a blast!

Homage to Consuelo Velázquez

Various artists will be on stage to remember the work of Consuelo Velázquez, the Mexican concert pianist, songwriter and recording artist who died in 2005 at the age of 88. She wrote such hits as “Amar y vivir,” “Verdad amarga,” “Franqueza,” “Cachito,” “Enamorada” and the enduring 1940s-era standard “Bésame mucho,” a romantic ballad that was recorded by artists around the globe.

Ballet de Jalisco 

The state’s only full-time professional dance troupe presents “Don Quijote,” based on the famous work by Miguel de Cervantes.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

Turn back the clock to hear swing dance melodies from yesteryear.  The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all over the world.

Stomp

Mexican debut for British theatrical sensation that has become a global phenomenon. The performers use their body and everyday objects as percussion instruments to create a physical theatrical experience. Stomp’s New York production passed its 5,000th performance mark in 2006.
