Ajijic drum fest celebrates Mexico’s indigenous heritage

La Fiesta del Tambor, a cultural festival wrapped around the traditions of ancient Mexico, promises to enliven the Ajijic plaza throughout the day on Saturday, October 11.

Scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event will feature the exhibition and performance of dozens of native percussion instruments, along with dancing to the drum beat, practice of healing rituals rooted in the pre-Hispanic era, demonstrations on the art of making corn tortillas and tachihual bread, and free samplings of regional cuisine.

The festival is tied into the October 12 commemoration of Día de la Raza.

Mexico’s version of Columbus Day customarily puts a sharper focus on the melding of indigenous and European cultures than the fortuitous 1492 landing of the La Niña, La Pinta and La Santa María that marked the “discovery” of the New World.
