Russian music concert
The principal flautist in the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, Belarus-born Antonio Dubatovka, returns to Ajijic Saturday, March 12, to join well known pianist Timothy Welch in a performance of Russian music for flute and piano.
Welch points out that for this concert Dubatovka has chosen the “crème de la crème of the repertoire of a professional flautist” and that the two musicians proposed the same scores for a concert at Mexico City’s revered Palacio de Bellas Artes and will perform it there later in this month.
“I’ve never practiced more and I’ve played hundreds of concerts. I usually don’t get so excited about a concert, but this music is exhilarating. It is either wild or utterly romantic,” said Welch.
The concert will consist of Otar Taktakishvili’s Sonata for Flute and Piano in C Major, Vladimir Tsybin’s Tarantella, Yuri Doljikov’s Romance “Nostalgie” and, after an intermission, Prokofiev’s lyrical and tender Sonata in D Major for Flute and Piano, Opus 94.

Judged art show
The Ajijic Society of the Arts Annual Judged Show will open Saturday, March 12, 5-7 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center. Drop in and congratulate the winners. Refreshments will be served.
Last call
The award-winning Ballet Folclórico Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos is scheduled for its last show of the season at the Auditorio de la Ribera on Sunday, March 13, noon.
The group’s extensive repertoire features seven numbers representing different regions of Jalisco, Michoacan and the Yucatán Pennisula.
Tickets, priced at 200 pesos for the center section and 150 for side seats, are on sale at SuperLake and the Auditorio box office.
Message to Cuba
Crossing Borders is the title of the spring concert for Los Cantantes del Lago, with performances set for Tuesday, March 15, 7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 16, 4 p.m. at the Auditiorio de la Ribera. LLT season tickets
The Lakeside Little Theatre is offering season ticket renewals and new sales for the 2016/2017 season as of March 17 in the LLT lobby, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The ticket price of 1,100 pesos includes an annual membership and a reserved seat for six plays. LLT also announces its annual general membership meeting on Wednesday, March 16. Registration begins 10 a.m. and the meeting is at 11 a.m. You must be a member to attend.
Mariachi Femenil
Ay ay ay ay! Mariachi Femenil de Tecalitlan performs at La Bodega, Thursday, March 17. This all-female band formed 22 years ago has between six and 12 mariachis under the direction of Cecilia Pinzana and Nancy Nuño. They have two records out and have played throughout Mexico and in Los Angeles. They perform each year at La Bodega with songs in English and Spanish.
Jazz at the Auditorium
Jazz lovers are in for a treat when Fractal Jazz Quartet performs at the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta, Thursday, March 17, 7 p.m. This special Viva la Musica concert will feature music of jazz greats John Coltrane, Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter, as well as original compositions by members of the quartet.
The jazz combo led by pianist and composer, Jorge Verdin, are highly trained musicians. Verdin earned a Masters in Music in Madrid. He has performed in concerts and festivals in Europe and the United States and has composed scores for films and TV series. Angel Madrigal, drummer/percussionist and composer, has a degree in Modern Music. Jesus Eleazar, who plays sax, and Gilberto Rios, who plays bass, will also have their pieces performed.
Tickets for this concert are 200 pesos and can be purchased at the auditorium, Diane Pearl, the LCS box office on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and at the door before the concert. All seating is open.
Exciting piano evening
Maestro Antonio Cabrero will present a concert at the Auditorio de la Ribera, Friday, March 18, 6:30 p.m. Cabrero, who has played many times at lakeside, is director of the San Miguel International Symphony Orchestra. This concert will consist of colorful piano pieces by Debussey, Ravel, Scheherezade and other composers.
VIP tickets are 300 pesos and general tickets 200 pesos, available at Diane Pearl and the auditorium.
Cuban colors on stage
The Instituto Cubano de la Música is lined up for a one-night appearance Saturday, March 19, 8 p.m., at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Avenida Madero at Hidalgo. Admission to the lively music and dance variety show coming all the way from Havana is priced at 150 pesos. Advance tickets are on sale at the cultural center’s office just off the entryway.
Artists’ collective
Mexicoelective, a group of local and expat artists, is holding its fourth exhibit and sale Saturday, March 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Parque El Castillo in La Floresta.
A raffle of art donated by each artist will be held for the benefit of the Facharte program to promote creation of murals in the area.
The featured artists are Victor Alcazar, painting; Jaime Barbiery, artistic photography; Heber Barajas, jewelry; Dana Douin, paper maché/mixed media; Ricky Granna, painting; Cesar Alfonso Mendoza Perez, bonsai; Rafael Piñeda, terra cotta; Rafael Piñeda, clay art; and Karen Spencer photography.

LLT Season Continues
Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Other Desert Cities” from March 25 to April 3 (no show on Monday, March 28). The play was written by Jon Robin Baitz and is directed by Russell Mack. Cast members are Collette Clavadetscher, Peter Luciano, Candace Luciano, Debra Bowers and Damyn Young.

Mexican music fest
“Al Son de las Olas” (To the Tune of the Waves) is the title given to Chapala’s first festival of traditional Mexican music, set to run Monday, March 21 through Sunday, March 27.
The program organized by the city’s Department of Culture will encompass concerts to entertain Holy Week visitors and the local public, conferences on music and dance traditions of western Mexico, and workshops for musicians on performance techniques, going on at various venues, all free of charge.
The March 21 kick-off begins with the presentation of several typical orchestras, 2 p.m., on the Malecón outside the Beer Garden. The opening ceremony, followed by a concert of Revolution era music, will take place at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, from 6 p.m.

Bus trips to JPO
Viva la Musica is offering bus trips to all the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra spring concerts at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara. Tickets are 350 pesos, (450 for non-members), available at the LCS box office Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m.- noon. Buses depart from the Carretera, just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic.
Sunday, March 20: “Shostakovich 19 – Stalin Code” – Paganini, Violin Concerto No.1, with violin soloist Ivan Perez; Shostakovich Symphony No. 10; conductor Marco Parisotto. Bus departs at 10:30 a.m.; concert starts 12:30 p.m.
