Last chance

At press time only about 20 tickets were left for a return performance of “House,” a dark and hilariously funny one-man show written by Daniel Macivor, one of Canada’s most accomplished playwrights and film directors, and performed by award-winning Canadian actor Alan Jordan.  The show will be presented on Wednesday, February 27 at Viva Mexico Restaurant in San Juan Cosala. A performance held two weeks ago was sold out.

Doors open at 4 p.m. A three-course gourmet meal will be served before the show, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Cost for the performance and the gourmet dinner is 300 pesos. Ten percent of the ticket proceeds will be donated to Operation Feed, a San Juan Cosala charity. Tickets can be purchased at Viva Mexico Restaurant (Porfirio Diaz Pte. 92, San Juan Cosala) or by contacting Agustin Vazquez by e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. 16 ACRES

The Mexican premier of “16 ACRES,” is coming to Ajijic on Monday, March 4.  This is a unique and not-to-be-missed opportunity to see the outstanding documentary about the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in New York City.

From the beginning, the project has been fraught with controversy, delays and politics. The struggle has taken 11 years, 19 government agencies, a dozen projects and more than 20 billion dollars. At the heart of the story is the dramatic tension between the noblest intentions, the desire of everyone involved to “get it right” and the politics, hubris, ego and ideology that are the bedrock of New York City.

Variety has described the film as “uncommonly engrossing and articulate.” Three people involved in the making of “16 ACRES,” Producer Mike Marcucci, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications of Silverstien Properties Dara McQuillan, and official photographer for the World Trade Center Project Joe Woolhead are coming to Ajijic especially to show the film, with the proceeds going to Niños Incapacitados.

There will be two benefit screenings on March 4 at Cinemas del Lago (Plaza Bugambilias, Ajijic). Tickets for the 2 p.m. screening cost 200 pesos.  They are priced at 400 pesos for the 5 p.m. show, but that includes one glass of wine, gourmet botanas and a no-host bar.

Both screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with Marcucci, McQuillan and Woolhead.

All tickets will be sold in advance and are available at the Cinemas del Lago box office from Monday to Friday, from 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m., or from any board member of Niños Incapacitados.

This documentary is being viewed at film festivals around the world but is unlikely to be shown at regular cinemas. You need to watch it on the big screen!

Ceramics

Galeria Sol Mexicano (Colon 13, Ajijic) will host the largest showing of high-fired artistic pottery ever seen at Lakeside, opening Saturday, March 2. On display will be more than 100 works of sculpture, wall pieces, lamps, bowls, vases and so forth.

Master ceramists Frank Howell, Rob Miller and Robert Burns Wilson will be on hand.  Howell and Miller will give a dramatic demonstration (including lots of fire and smoke) of raku glazing.

Meanwhile, gallery owner Lorraine Farrow plans a two-week showing of the graphic art of Pat Apt.

Romantic benefit

“Come Fly with Me,” a show starring baritone Mac Morison with guest Carol Bedford, will benefit the Tepehua Centro Comunitario in Chapala. The dates are Sunday, March 10 and Monday, March 11, 5 p.m. at Libramiento 139. Tickets cost 350 pesos and include hors d’oeuvres, parking, and a no-host wine bar besides the show in a beautiful setting. They are on sale now at Diane Pearl Colecciones. Ballet Folklorico

The Ballet Folklorico de Ixtlahuacan will present a special program to mark their 25th anniversary on Sunday, March 10, noon, at the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta.

The troupe is famous for rescuing regional dances and using authentic costumes, besides having amazing dancing prowess.  They are a five-time winner of the cherished Rafael Zamarripa state dance prize.

The show also features live mariachi music.

Tickets are priced at 120 and 150 pesos and are on sale at SuperLake Market and the Auditorium.

String Thing

A String Thing will be open as usual this week (Thursday February 21), but will be closed for two weeks (February 28 and March 7). It will reopen as usual on Thursday, March 14.

Film festival

The Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation would like to thank the community for their wonderful support of this year’s very successful Jewish Film Festival. A substantial amount of the proceeds was donated to the Tepehua Centro Comunitario, a community center in Chapala, to further the center’s aims of helping this economically challenged neighborhood.
