Concert/opera gala

A concert that all music fans should not miss is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 4 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (the old Chapala train station).

The concert features the Ensamble de Camara de la Orquesta Axixic, along with the Guadalajara Operatic Workshop. The musical director is Daniel Medeles.

LCS Summer Film Festival

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) 2014 Summer Film Festival film will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, in the Neill James Sala at the LCS campus. This week the group will view part two of “Woodrow Wilson.” The first portion of the biography of the 28th president of the United States was featured on July 10.

Admission to the Summer Film Festival is restricted to current LCS members.

 

Multicultural party

Both Jesus Lopez Vega and his brother Antonio Lopez Vega, as well as Salvador Ortiz and Efren Gonzalez, will be showing paintings for sale at the Art Party sponsored by the Lake Chapala Painting Guild on Saturday July 19, 5 p.m. at La Bodega restaurant in Ajijic.

During the party models will pose for quick sketches by guests. Members will come dressed as world-famous artists. A cash bar will be on hand.

Participants are encouraged to remain for dinner (at their expense) and dance to the music of Ricardo and Blanca until 11 p.m.  Contact 766-5606 for more information.

 

Viva la Musica Concert

Cesar Becerra, a talented 21-year-old singer from Guadalajara, will thrill classical music lovers with his mature baritone voice on Sunday, July 20, 4 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera.  Pianist Timothy G. Ruff Welch will accompany Becerra in this Viva la Musica summer season concert.

Becerra showed his musical promise at an early age, excelling on the flute and piano. He began his musical studies at the Academia Inlevare in Guadalajara under the tuition of Joaquin Garzon and has participated in recitals as both a soloist and principal bass singer.

He sang as principal bass in the choir of the one-week Elevare music camp in Ajijic in 2013.

Becerra foresees a career as a bel canto operatic singer and is currently studying voice with Rodolfo Acosta  at the National Music Conservatory in Mexico City. After competing in Viva la Musica´s annual scholarship auditions last August, he was awarded a scholarship to support his university studies.

At the July 20 concert, Becerra will perform arias by various composers, including Scarlatti, Handel and Mozart, as well as some songs in Spanish.

Tickets are 200 pesos and may be purchased at Diane Pearl Colecciones, the Auditorium, and the Lake Chapala Society on Thursdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Viva la Musica is a Lakeside membership organization whose mission is to present performances by outstanding Mexican musicians and support promising young Mexican musicians with scholarships. Guitar recitals

Guitar recitals are scheduled at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo on Thursday, July 24 (with Juan Pablo Garcia Velazco) and Thursday, July 31 (with   Nicolae Ionescu). Both start at 7 p.m.
