Ribera Arts Review - March 13, 2015

Naked Stage

“Yankee Tavern” by Steven Dietz and directed by Phyllis Silverman will be performed at the Naked Stage this month.

This play is billed as a mystery, yet audience members will be scratching their heads and laughing at some not-so-absurd conspiracy theories.

Performing on Friday, March 20, Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22, all at 4 p.m., will be

Pierre Blackburn, Dick Yanko, Jon DeYoung, Graham Miller and Tina Leoonard. Tickets will be available at The Naked Stage, Rio Bravo 10-A in Ajijic.

People Publicity

“People” magazine (circulation over 3.5 million) will feature the book “Unlikely Warrior” by Georg Rauch as a People’s Pick in its March 23 issue. Longtime Jocotepec resident Phyllis Rauch, who translated her late husband’s World War II experiences, originally published as “A Jew With the Iron Cross,” is beyond excited. The book’s name change came when it was published recently for school libraries and as a Scholastic Readers Club edition for young adult readers.

Photos at La Misión

A show of vibrant Mexican-themed photos by Jamie Barbiery and Karen Spencer, “Mexican Perspectives in Photography Exhibition,” opens at La Misión Restaurant Friday, March 13, 2-5 p.m. and will remain in place at the restaurant at Rio Bravo 7 until April 10.

A portion of the art sales will go to La Misión to support their ongoing project, feeding the needy, and help them achieve their long-term objective to change the lives of area mothers and children in need.

Sunday movie

“A Better Life,”  a story about an illegal immigrant from Mexico struggling to help his son avoid gangs in Los Angeles, is the third film in this year’s Sunday Afternoon at the Movies series, sponsored by the Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad Mexico.  Utterly devoid of political posturing and moralizing, the film deals instead with the universal human yearning for security, stability, and at least some degree of happiness in one’s life.

Showtime is 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, at Cinemas del Lago, Theater 1, Bugambilias Plaza, Ajijic.

Alejandro Grattan-Dominguez, editor of El Ojo del Lago magazine, will moderate a post-show discussion.

Tickets at 50 pesos each are available at the box office.  The public is welcome.

Net proceeds help fund the sponsoring organization’s voter registration program for all U.S. expats living at Lakeside, regardless of political affiliation.

The Annual March Judged Art Show with entries in a variety of media by members of the Ajijic Society of the Arts opens on Saturday, March 14, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Ajijic Cultural Center. Ajijic artist Efren Gonzalez is presenting a pair of Wine and Lecture afternoons as he discusses to groups (limited to 15 guests) the symbolism and history that are revealed in the murals he has painted in the Chapala Municipal Office.

All proceeds from the lectures on Wednesday, March 18 and Saturday, March 21, both at 4 p.m., will help pay for cultural community projects. Tickets at 200 pesos are available at the Ajijic Casa de Cultura on the plaza and the Efren Gonzalez Gallery on Ramon Corona, south of San Andres church.

Sax Quartet

“Disney Jazz for Sax” on Tuesday, March 24, 7 p.m. at Trattoria di Axixic is a special fundraiser designed by Jose Eduardo García Espinoza (Lalo) to benefit four lakeside children’s music programs.

Garcia Espinoza, who teaches music to children in each of these groups, has arranged favorite Disney tunes to be played by a quartet of local professional jazz saxophone players. Participating are Rick Jasper and Steve Caver on alto sax, Dave Brown on tenor sax and Mike Leisenbach on baritone sax.

Tickets for the event are 200 pesos and available from Charter Club Tours. Receiving the benefit from the concert will be Academia de Ukuleles de la Ribera, the music programs of Love in Action Home Shelter, Villa Infantil de Señora de Guadalupe y San Jose, and CREM, the lakeside’s children’s orchestra. The children from the newly formed Academia de Ukuleles may share the event spotlight by performing one of the songs they have just learned to play.
