Book Launch

Mexican writer Ricardo Sigala Gomez is the guest of honor of a Saturday, March 21, 8 p.m. cocktail event at the Casa de Cultura de Jocotepec as he launches a new publication of the 1995 “Periplos, A Diary of Voyages” – the first volume of his trilogy.

Sigala Gomez uses poetic prose to tell the fantastic stories of the magical trips recorded in his small notebook as he travels through cities and along roads until he invites us to join him in a universe filled with multiple imaginary spaces, places, times, people, animals and experiences. You’ll join him as he visits mythical creation scenes and ventures across the seas and mountains to the source of other stories and myths.

?Citizen Koch’

The negative effect of almost unlimited money in U.S. politics is documented in â€śCitizen Koch,” the fourth film in the Sunday Afternoon at the Movies series, sponsored by the Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad Mexico.

Showtime is 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22 at Cinemas del Lago, Theater #1, Bugambilias Plaza, Ajijic.  Tickets are 50 pesos at the box office.  The public is welcome.   Discussions immediately following film are led by Larry Pihl.

Net proceeds help fund the sponsoring organization’s voter registration program for all U.S. expats living Lakeside, regardless of political affiliation.

Disney Jazz

A unique fundraiser featuring the performance of a jazz saxophone quartet to benefit four children’s music programs is set for Tuesday, March 24, 7 p.m. at Trattoria di Axixic.

The Lakeside Sax Quartet comprising Rick Jasper, Steve Caver, David Brown and Mike Leisenbach will rock the audience with favorite tunes from animated movies transcribed and arranged by Jose Eduardo Garcia Espinoza.

The four groups to benefit from this event all teach music to local children.

Event innovator Garcia Espinoza works with the children at all of the groups, which are: Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (CREM), Academia de Ukuleles de la Ribera, Love in Action, and Villa Infantil de Guadalupe and San Jose.

With La Trattoria donating space for the event, all proceeds from the sales of the 200-peso tickets will go to the children’s programs. Tickets are available at Charter Club Tours or by calling (33) 1221-3403 or (33) 1096-4920. Children 12 and under will be admitted free in the company of a ticket holder.

The funds will be used to continue the music instruction. It is hoped they will allow an additional one or two year-long CREM scholarships for lessons, new instruments or supplies for the ukulele organization. Love in Action hopes to receive music notebooks, enough funding to restore the home’s piano or the purchase of instruments that will allow children to attend either CREM or ukulele lessons. Because Villa Infantil?s program has not yet started, the first supplies will include a white board, music notebooks and a good set of percussion instruments.

This delightful concert will help give approximately 80 area children the opportunity to be involved in music – lessons that last a lifetime.

LLT

In its next offering, Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) presents “The Dixie Swim Club,” a comedy by Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten and Jessie Jones depicting the continuing friendships of five women who met on a college swim team.

The audience spends four weekends spanning 35 years with these friends as they love, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives.

The LLT production is directed by Barbara Clippinger and features Georgette Richmond, Candace Luciano, Sharon Lowry, Lynn Phelan and Patsi Krakoff.

“Dixie” opens Friday, March 27, and runs through Sunday, April 5. The 225-peso tickets go on sale at the theatre box office from 10 a.m. until noon beginning March 25. Tickets can also be purchased by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or calling (376) 766-0954.
