Ribera Arts Review – August 8, 2015

Sacred music

The Metropolitan Cathedral Children’s School Choir, under the direction of Aurelio Martinez Corona, presents a concert at the Auditorio de la Ribera on Saturday, August 8, 7 p.m. 

Children’s choirs have filled the Guadalajara Cathedral with song since 1554. This concert will highlight the diverse traditions and periods of sacred music. Visitors can expect to hear the choir interpret Nahuatl, ancient, medieval, renaissance, romanticist, colonial and contemporary music. 

The program features 13 pieces by composers that include Blas Galindo, Handel, Mendelssohn, Offenbach and Coulais.  John Rutter’s Children’s Mass will be the emotional finale. Tickets are priced at 150 pesos.

Abstract art

The exhibit “Contemporary Fractions,” featuring 22 abstract paintings by Tapatio Hugo Barajas, opens on Wednesday, August 12, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old Chapala train station). The show is part of the “Itinerant Expositions” program sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Secretariat. 

Jocotepec openings

The Casa de Cultura in Jocotepec is sponsoring a double exhibit showcasing artists Claudio Hernanez “Chenlla” and Coyi Coyi, opening Saturday, August 15, 8 p.m.  

“Animagnético” is title of the exhibit of new art by Chenlla.  Coyi Coyi’s “El Mundo Secreto de Pepo” explores a magical, mystical world. 

The evening also includes an installation by the Huakal collective, and a session of tall tales and music by Christian Cuevas.

A toast will open the event. Entrance is free. The Casa de Cultura is located at Hidalgo 38 in the center of Jocotepec. All are welcome.

Free Spirit Piano Trio 

Viva la Musica presents the Free Spirit Piano Trio in concert at the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta on Thursday, August 20, 7 p.m. 

Pianist Rosa Maria Valdez, violinist Robert Márkus and cellist Areli Medeles will perform music by Dvořák, Janáček, Ponce, Carrasco, Cerda and Toussaint.        

Valdez, chair of the piano department at the University of Guadalajara Music School, has been a soloist with numerous orchestras in Mexico and given many concerts in the United States, usually playing a repertoire of classical and romantic music, as well as works by Mexican composers.

Markus, who studied music in his native Slovakia, performed in Austria, Hungary, Germany, the Czech Republic before coming to Mexico. A soloist with Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, he now plays with the Higinio Ruvalcaba Chamber Orchestra and is a professor at the University of Guadalajara Music School. 

Medeles has also performed with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, the Medeles Quartet, the Ajijic String Quintet and the Guadalajara Youth Orchestra. Currently she teaches at the CREM music school, plays in the Zapopan Symphony Orchestra and in the “Quatricelli” quartet.

Tickets at 200 pesos are available at the Auditorium, Diane Pearl Colecciones and from the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) box office on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. until noon. Also at the door before the concert.  All seating is open.

Opening

Maria Di Paola reports that last week’s exhibition of paintings and masks made out of palm fiber from Durango by artist Manuel Valles Gomez was ahuge success. Here Gomez captures the enthusiasm of collector Gutmund Winters as he holds one of the masks that now enrich his collection. The masks and paintings are up through September 8.

Photo contest 

Lakeside shutterbugs with a knack for snapping shots of local lifestyles and landscapes have a chance to win cash prizes and statewide exposure of their talents in the second annual Chapala Cultura y Tradición photography contest.

The competition run by the city’s culture office is open to persons residing in any lakeshore municipality, with the option of submitting a conventional photograph – in either the professional or amateur division – fitting into the theme of traditional crafts and trades, or an image captured with a mobile device (smart phone or tablet) depicting the Chapala area’s scenic attractions. 

Submission requirements:

- Each entry (one per contestant) must be an original unedited image, in color or black and white, submitted in jpg format with a minimum resolution of 240 DPI.

Contest rules:

All entries complying with the above specifications will be uploaded to the municipal government’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GobiernoMunicipaldeChapala) on August 21, to be viewed by the public through August 28.

Social network users may vote their preferences between those dates by clicking “like” on their favorite pictures. Voting popularity will determine five finalists in the professional division and ten finalists each for the amateur and mobile categories. 

The 25 entries qualifying as finalists will be printed and mounted to comprise a photo exhibit that will tour different localities throughout the state. All of these will be rated by a panel of expert judges to select the best shot in each division.

The top ranking professional will win 5,000 pesos, with 2,500 pesos awarded for first-place showings in the other two categories. 

Winners will be announced at the exhibit opening on Friday, September 4, 6 p.m., in the Chapala City Hall lobby.
