Mozart, Paganini & Friends
The Camerata de Jalisco presents a recital entitled “Mozart, Paganini & Friends” at the Casa de Cultura de Ajijic on Sunday, August 16, 6 p.m.
Included on the program are “Concerto Grosso Palladio” by Karl Jenkins, “Variations Moses in Egypt” by Paganini and Symphony No. 25 in G minor by Mozart.
Tickets at the door are 100 pesos.
Art Exhibit
San Juan Cosala artists DePaul Durham and Isidro “Chivo” Xilonzochitil (Xilotl) are hosting an inauguration of their joint art show, “Vecinos de Cosalá,” on Saturday, August 15, 5 p.m.at the Casa de Cultura de Ajijic. There will be live music, a welcome cocktail, botanas and lots of great art. Entrance to this event is free.
Chapala Concerts
The Universidad de Guadalajara Music School is organizing a trio of free weekly recitals at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (the former Chapala train station).
The slate of programs begins with Alejandra Trejo performing works by Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy and Domingo Lobato on Thursday, August 20, 7 p.m.
The second concert is set for Thursday, August 27, 7 p.m. when Juan Pablo Garcia Velasco interprets music by Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin, Maurice Ravel and Mexico’s Manuel M. Ponce.
Wrapping up the series on Thursday, September 3, 7 p.m. will be Roberto Carlos Ramirez Figueroa playing preludes of Johann Sebastian Bach and then interpreting pieces by Mozart, Schubert, Elgar, Debussy and Ponce.
Viva la Musica
The Free Spirit Piano Trio, hosted by Viva la Musica, will appear in concert on Thursday August 20, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta.
Pianist Rosa Maria Valdez, violinist Robert Markus and cellist Areli Medeles will perform music by Dvořák, Janáček, Ponce, Carrasco, Cerda and Toussaint.
Valdez, chair of the piano department at the University of Guadalajara, has been a soloist with numerous orchestras in Mexico and has performed in concert in the United States. Her repertoire includes a wide range of classical and romantic music, as well as pieces by Mexican composers.
Markus studied music in his native Slovakia, and performed as a violinist in Austria, Hungary, Germany and the Czech Republic. In Mexico he has soloed with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra. He now plays with the Higinio Ruvalcaba Chamber Orchestra and is a professor at the University of Guadalajara.
Lakeside native Medeles has performed with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, the Medeles Quartet, the Ajijic String Quintet and the Guadalajara Youth Orchestra. She teaches at the CREM music school, plays in the Zapopan Symphony Orchestra and in the Quatricelli quartet.
Tickets for the concert are 200 pesos and may be purchased at the auditorium, at Diane Pearl Colecciones, from the Lake Chapala Society box office on Thursday and Fridays, from 10 a.m.to noon, and at the door before the concert. All seating is open.
ECA showcases crafts
Local artisans will be offering a wide array of hand-crafted goods during the summer run of Expo Chapala Artesanal (ECA) set for Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23 at the west end of the waterfront Malecón. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.daily. Admission is free to buyers and browsers.
ECA rates as a shopper’s paradise for bargain hunters and connoisseurs of Mexican handicrafts. Retail and wholesale buyers alike will find great deals on locally produced hand-loomed textiles, hand-embroidered clothing, typical huarache footwear and other leather goods, jewelry and fashion accessories. Decorative items for the home and garden include original ceramic and ironwork pieces, pre-Columbian reproductions, bonsai plants and containers, corn husk flowers and figurines and original works by lakeside artists.
