Art Opening

Viva Mexico! ‘S’ Arte, a collective exhibit of original works by Tapatio artsts, will be on display at El Corazon Creativo (Galeana 14, Ajijic) on Sunday, September 13, from noon.

Most of these innovative, award-winning Guadalajara artists are exhibiting their work in Ajijic for the first time.

Musical entertainment and appetizers will be served to the art enthusiasts at 5 p.m. to signal the opening reception for the new upstairs studio of Ajijic native and legacy artist, Antonio Lopez Vega.

El Corazon Creativo has been established to empower the community by providing the tools, materials, training, work and retail space so those with limited resources can create and sell items with a minimal financial outlay.

The Viva Mexico! ‘S’ Arte show is a fundraiser to generate funds for the third Sangre Viva Festival to be held in the Ajijic Plaza on Friday, October 9, through Sunday, October 1.

This festival showcases a wide range of artistic manifestations that have evolved from Mexico’s indigenous roots. More than 50 exhibitors will participate in the arts and crafts sales expo. In addition, a variety of free workshops and musical events will be on the schedule.

Young musicians

The Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil de Guadalajara (Young Symphonic Orchestra of Guadalajara) will take the stage of the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta in a much-anticipated concert on Saturday, September 19, 6 p.m.

The concert will be conducted by Enrique Barrios and Chris Wilshire will be the invited violinist.

One of Mexico’s most acclaimed musical directors, Barrios has conducted orchestras and opera in 23 countries. He has directed the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, Aguascalientes Symphony, Bellas Artes Theatre Orchestra, Bellas Artes Chamber Orchestra, as well as serving associate conductor of the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Antonio Symphony in Texas among others.

Wilshire, a Canadian who studied violin performance at the Glenn Gould Professional School and the University of Toronto, leads a varied and unique musical career, traveling between his two beloved countries performing and teaching regularly in both.   Having performed solo and chamber music recitals in Europe, Canada, Mexico and the United States, he’s also the founder and artistic director of the Scotiabank Northern Lights Music Festival and the musical director at the Palacio de la Cultura y Communicacion in Guadalajara.  He has also  taught the Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil’s string section for the past three years.

The reputation of the Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil de Guadalajara grows all the time.  Most recently, the orchestra performed a sell-out concert at Guadalajara’s Telmex Auditorium dedicated to the music of the Beatles.

Tickets for the September 19 concert cost 100 pesos and are available at the Lake Chapala Society, Diane Pearl Colecciones and at the door.

Lute and Baroque Arias.

Katia Sanchez and Jim Byers will be featured in a voice and guitar concert on Sunday, September 20, 4 p.m. in the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station) in Chapala.

The soprano voice of Sanchez blends well with the classical guitar. For nearly 15 years she has been featured as a soloist with the Jalisco State Chorus and she is the principal soloist with the Ensamble Siglos Pasados. She has performed many lakeside concerts to appreciative audiences.

Sanchez studied voice at the University of Guadalajara and has performed in several musicals, including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Miserables” and “Jesus Christ, Superstar.”

Byers has been enthralled with the music of the earliest centuries for many years. He will draw on his repertoire to perform lute songs of the Renaissance period and arias of the Baroque era with Sanchez.

Byers attended the University of California in Berkeley where he focused on Renaissance Literature, Italian and Elizabethan poetry, music and theater before he delved into pantomime. He performed a production based on Tarot cards off-Broadway in New York in 1969-1970 before working with a dance/theater group in Paris. He performs frequently in Guadalajara and at lakeside playing classical guitar.

Proceeds from this concert will help Sanchez defray the hospital expenses from the recent birth of her daughter.

Tickets are 100 pesos and available at the door or in advance at Diane Pearl Colecciones or from Jim Byers at (376) 765-2605 or (33) 1315-2169.

The acoustics at the former train station make this a great place to hear this type of intimate music.

Open ballet class

The Classical Ballet School of the Auditorio de la Ribera invites one and all to an open dance class at the auditorium on Friday, September 18, 11:30 a.m.

Anyone who is interested in classical dance is welcome to attend and sit in on the class. The school is operated by the parents of Guadalajara-born ballet stars Isaac and Esteban Hernandez.
