Ajijic Art Show

The Centro Cultural Ajijic is currently hosting the collective exhibit, “Perspectives of Ajijic,” which pays homage to local masters of art.

The show, curated jointly with the Chapala municipal government, opened at the center on Saturday, November 21 and forms part of the many events surrounding the village’s San Andres fiestas.

Guests enjoyed cocktails and live music at the exhibit’s inauguration, as the local artists were recognized for their commitment to their work and the community. The works will be on display until Thursday, December 3.

Benefit Concert

The CREM Chorus and Orchestra from the Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales present a benefit Christmas concert on Sunday, November 29, 11 a.m. at Eventos Fiesta del Sol.

This concert is one of a series sponsored by Accion Voluntario, a local group that raises funds for special projects at lakeside orphanages. The proceeds from this concert will repair and reinforce the gate at Villa Infantil de Guadalupe y San Jose on the south shore.

Tickets at 400 pesos for adults and 150 pesos for children aged over five years are available at Tony’s Restaurant, Fiesta del Sol, La Reserva and El Punto Extra de Chapala.

For more information call (33) 3577-2768 or (33) 3815-6695.

Jeffrey Straker

A concert by Canadian pop-folk singer and songwriter Jeffrey Straker takes place at the Auditorio de la Ribera on Wednesday, December 2 to benefit the children of Niños Incapacitados and the Lake Chapala Society educational programs.

Straker gives more than 100-plus shows each year, performing in living rooms, clubs, theaters, festivals and other venues.

The concert starts at 4 p.m.  Tickets at the box office.

Galeria Sol Mexicano

Claudia Nery’s paintings will be featured in a new exhibit at Galeria Sol Mexicano, opening Friday, December 4, 4-7 p.m. The show will be up for a month and feature special discounts on some of the works. The gallery is at Colon 13 in Ajijic.

Guadalajara native Neary earned a degree in architecture before she began working full time on her fine art painting. In her mixed media works, she often uses the technique of incorporating diluted inks along with acrylic paints for bold color and shape.  The subjects and themes of her paintings reflect the symbolism of both pre-Hispanic and modern Mexican culture.

Painting Demos

The Lake Chapala Painting Guild opens “Artful Reflections” at La Creperie, located within Restaurante Maria Isabel on the Ajijic lakefront, on Friday, December 4, 4-6 p.m.  The exhibit features 17 new and previously shown works created by Guild members. Margaritas will be served two for the price of one.

Several Guild members will conduct painting demonstrations on Friday, December 4 and Sunday, December 5, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The paintings completed during the demos will be available for sale.

Annual Pottery Sale

The annual pre-Christmas Show and Sale of the work of Master Potter Frank Howell and his associates is set for Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Lirios 40 in Mirasol.

Howell is offering 30-50 percent off the regular price of a number of table lamps, wall sculptures and other large pieces. His popular production-ware items – mugs, bowls and other useful objects – will be featured along with works by other crafts people.

Nunsense Auditions

Lakeside Little Theatre has put a call for nine women who can sing, dance and act.

They are needed for “Nunsense,” a fun-filled play featuring the show staged by the survivors at the Little Sisters of Hoboken Nunnery after 52 of the sisters succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise.

The show pulsates with merriment and an unabashed desire to make you laugh, proving conclusively that nun rhymes with fun. The piece will be directed by Barbara Clippenger, with Judy Hendrick serving as music director, and runs Friday, February 19 through Sunday, March 1.

Auditions are on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with auditions beginning at 10 a.m. Anyone with a specialty is a bonus.  For script and information, contact Clippenger at This email address is being protected from spambots.
