Ribera Arts Review - July 30, 2016

Readers Theatre

The Naked Stage Readers Theatre presents “Ripcord” by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Collette Clavadetscher, Friday through Sunday, July 29-31.

The play, a high-stakes comedy about two women of a certain age locked in a no-holds-barred battle to the death, stars Robert Stephen Browning, Carolyn Cothran, Kevin Leitch, Georgette Richmond, Alfred Kirkland, Jr. and L.B. Hamilton.  

The box office opens at 3:15 p.m. and the show begins at 4 p.m.  A cash bar, proceeds of which benefit local animal shelters, is available from 3 p.m. The Naked Stage is located at Hidalgo 261 on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Modern arts fest

As part of Chapala’s Sincronico festival, the Centro Ajijic Cultural – located on the main plaza – will inaugurate an exhibition of contemporary lakeside area artists Saturday, July 30, 5 p.m.

Another exhibit of Chapala artists will unfold at 6 p.m. the same evening at the Auditorio de la Ribera.

Other events include a concert by a cello and violin ensemble in San Nicolás de Ibarra, Sunday, July 31, 8 p.m. and a concert by the Banda Sinfonica Infantil from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Wednesday, August 3, 8 p.m., at the outdoor La Vela forum at the west of Chapala’s Malecón.

All presentations are free of charge.

Imaginary journeys 

Release your inner child and follow local kids on imaginary journeys in their presentation of “Midnight Travellers of the Universe,” going on stage this weekend at the Lakeside Little Theatre. 

The production is the end result of the series of creative workshops organized by Ajijic’s Cochera Cultural to encourage and empower youngsters through self-expression in diverse arts forms. The program incorporated storytelling and creative writing sessions held in May and the exploration of visual arts, acting, music and dance through this month’s summer theater camp, tied together a strong focus on native legends, history and cultural traditions.   

The show premiers Saturday July 30, 4 p.m., with repeat performances set for the same evening at 7 p.m., and Sunday July 31, 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Fiaga Boutique, Corazón Creativo and the theater box office. 

CREM course for kids

The Regional Centro for Musical Studies (CREM) is offering summer music courses for kids and teens aged 6-15. The courses are for experienced young musicians, as well as those who have never touched an instrument before. 

Each day begins with relaxation and a little yoga, followed by music and music appreciation classes, and advice on how to move, stand, smile and feel comfortable on stage. Also planned is a creative workshop, including painting lessons. The summer workshop will conclude with an exposition/concert on the last day for family and friends.

The courses run Monday to Friday, August 1 to 5, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Terraza Medeles in Ajijic. The cost per person, including materials, is 950 pesos.  For more information, call 331-118-2130 or (333) 496-8976.

Sing-a-long fundraiser

Javier and Martha González at La Bodega Ajijic are hosting a fundraiser, Tuesday, August 2, 6-10 p.m., to help the Lakeside Assistance Group collect funds to facilitate the shipping, storage and distribution of millions of dollars’ worth of firefighting, lifesaving and hospital equipment being brought down from Canada. 

Paul Brier and Francis Dryden will present “The Great American Songbook.” A 50/50 draw and a silent auction are also planned. Tickets, at 300 pesos, include dinner. Contact John Kelly at 331-758-0676.

LLT members meet

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) announces a special membership meeting Wednesday, August 3.  Registration: 10 a.m., meeting: 11 a.m. at the theater.  Individuals who have not renewed their memberships may do so during the registration hour. Registration and membership sign-ups will close at the commencement of the meeting.

Opera Gala

Soprano Maria de Jesus Cardenas, mezzosoprano Teresa Banderas, tenor Jose Luis Villarruel and baritone Ricardo Lavin will sing opera pieces by Mozart, Bizet, Bellini and Rossini at a benefit for the Train Garden at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo on Thursday, August 4, 7 p.m. Entrance is 200 pesos.

LLT auditions

Lakeside Little Theatre will conduct auditions for “Painting Churches,” Friday, August 5 and Saturday, August 6 at the theater. Needed are one man and two women. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and auditions start at 10 a.m. Production dates are September 23 to October 2.

Lakeside Little Theatre welcomes and encourages everyone interested in acting, new or experienced, to attend auditions for any of this season’s plays.

CREM concert

The CREM children’s choir and orchestra and the Victor Manuel Medeles Orchestra will give a summer concert with homage to Disney on Saturday, August 6, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera. Tickets are 150 pesos at the Auditorio. For more information, see www.cremajijic.com.

Guitar recital

Guitarist Eduardo Lara will perform Thursday, August 18, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala. Hear works by M. Gangi (Italy), Eddie Lara (México), Joaquín Turina (Spain), J. K. Mertz (Hungary), David Gilmour, Roger Waters (England) and Federico Moreno Torroba (Spain). Entrance is 50 pesos.
