Ribera Arts Review - August 30, 2016

Naked Stage Theatre

Georgette Richmond directs “Glorious,” written by Peter Quilter, running Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21.

Set in 1940s New York, the play centers on Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano who was known as “the first lady of the sliding scale” and warbled and screeched her way through performances to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter.

The Naked Stage Readers Theatre is located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. Box office opens 3:15 p.m. and the show begins at 4 p.m.

Modern dance

The Sincronico Modern Arts Festival in Chapala is hosting a presentation by the renowned Rafael Carlín Contemporary Dance Company from Guadalajara at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala Friday, August 19. Tickets are 80 pesos.

Xill Fessenden is working with photographs from the project E- Mammel, in which cameras in the mountains above Lakeside capture images of local animals, in coordination with the Museo de Paleontologia in Guadalajara.

Photographs by local documented local birds and butterflies by photographer Paul Hart are also presented. Fessenden also has imagery depicting insects and mushrooms endemic to the area. The inauguration on Saturday will include a conference with biologists from the lepidoptera (butterfly enclosure) in the Parque Agua Azul in Guadalajara, as well as a performance by local artists who have created masks and imagery of animals to protest the destruction of our local mountains and lake.

Avante garde music

Club Ukulele de Laguna presents their Sizzling Summer Singalong Monday, August 22, 5 p.m. at Restaurant Maria Isabel.

The song lineup about summer fun includes “Under The Boardwalk,” “Happy Together,” Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” and lots of tested songs from the group’s growing repertoire.

The Singalong is held without charge and any donations collected during intermission will go to benefit the 40 children who learn music while playing ukuleles in the club’s sponsored Academia de Ukuleles de la Ribera.

Mark Twain

Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Mark Twain, Uncensored” written by Ed Tasca – who also has the title role – and directed by Barbara Clippinger, Tuesday, August 23 through Sunday, August 28.

Tasca has purposely attempted to create a realistic Mark Twain, noting little-known events from the great author’s life, and including whimsical interruptions from real-life associates and Twain’s fictional characters to give his lecture presentation a rich theatrical scope. The result is a memoir of Twain, mostly invention, but derived from the writer’s biography, favorite subjects and irritants.

Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. evenings and 3 p.m. for Sunday’s matinee. Tickets can be purchased at the LLT box office, 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the same hours every day during the show, except Sunday. Vintage photographs

Chapala’s Archivo Histórico is exhibiting a display of around 80 vintage photographs.

The collection includes images captured between the late 1800’s and the 1970’s showing lake and village scenes, vacation mansions, local people and famous personalities who lived and visited the area.

Although many of the pictures are not dated, a walk through the gallery gives the viewer an excellent sense of how Chapala and the lake have evolved over the past century and a quarter.

The Archivo is located on Avenida Madero, on the ground floor of Chapala city hall’s north wing. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; morning hours only on weekends and holidays.
