Society goes green

American Society (Amsoc) headquarters is proud to own a series of 16 new solar panels. The decision to invest in greener energy was initiated by society member Bruce Newby, who managed to arrange a fair price from panel company, Solarhouse.

The installation is said to have cost around 12,000 dollars, with about 1,000 pesos for manual labor, all of which will pay for itself within approximately six years. It’s a good move for the society’s finances, as the building’s electricity bills have been reduced to a minimum, but members can also feel proud that they are reducing their carbon footprint, having made the headquarters “as green as it can be.”

Newby remarked that solar panels are not common among locals in Guadalajara, because people are “reluctant to invest,” but with 12 hours a day of almost guaranteed sunshine in the state, solar energy is a very simple yet positive step towards a greener city. Newby is so impressed by the panels installed on Amsoc’s roof that he is due to have eight panels of his own within the next week. “They’re guaranteed at 80 percent productivity for 88 years and only need hosing down once a month in the dry season,” he added: “I’ll be long gone before these need seeing to again!”

Happy birthday!

One of the city’s oldest residents, Doña Evangelina Cruz Hernandez, celebrated her 109th birthday last week.

Born in Zapopan on February 13, 1904, Cruz is a widow of 40 years. She is cared for by Metropolitan Center for Elderly Adults (CEMAM) in its “Luz del Dia” facilities in Chapalita Sur, with the Family Development Agency (DIF) providing food and medical support.

Cruz is the oldest person cared for by CEMAM, which provides educational classes, counseling, care and recreational activities in order to raise the quality of life for senior citizens. At her birthday celebrations, Cruz revealed that her mother lived to the age of 112 and prayed that God will let her live to the same age.
