Amsoc voting

Voting in the American Society (Amsoc) annual election for officers will continue through Saturday, November 29, 10 a.m., when the annual general assembly will be held. All members are welcome to attend the assembly.   Amsoc is at San Francisco 3332, Colonia Chapalita.

Flower show & sale

This year’s Feria de las Flores y las Agroindustrias Otoño 2014 (Flower and Floriculture Fall Fair 2014) will be set up Friday, November 28 through Sunday, November 30 on the pedestrian section of Avenida Chapultepec, between La Paz and Hidalgo.

The fiery red emblematic Christmas flower, the poinsettia, or flor de nochebuena, will no doubt be much in demand at the show, which will run each day from 10 a.m. However, exhibitors and vendors will showcase many different flower and plant species from this region.

Aids Day

A campaign targeting the transgender and transsexual population will be the main focus of World Aids Day in Jalisco on December 1.

“The prevalence of AIDS among this community is around 16 to 32 percent, about one in four (persons)” Consejo Estatal para la Prevención del SIDA (COESIDA) Technical Secretary Ariel Campos Loza said this week. “If these men and women don’t get help, it can lead to depression and substance abuse.”

Campos Loza said around half the transgender and transsexual population refuse to use public health services because they fear discrimination.
COESIDA and non-profits such as Vihas de Vida will be out in force in Guadalajara and provincial plazas – including Chapala and Puerto Vallarta – this weekend disseminating information about Aids. Free Aids testing is scheduled at the Plaza Universidad (Juarez and Colon) in the Guadalajara city center on Friday, November 28, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

World Aids Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World Aids Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

Looking for a friend?

“Hogares Dejando Huella 2014” provides an opportunity for all those looking for a canine companion to find the perfect match. Dozens of dogs will be up for adoption in this second annual event held in the Parque Metropolitano on Sunday, November 30, from 10 a.m.

The fair will also feature vendors hawking all manner of things related to pets, most particularly dogs. A big turnout is anticipated, as the park – which now boasts a new area specifically for dogs – attracts hundred of canines and their owners at weekends.

As well as expositors, organizers promise entertainment, fashion, food and fun.

The fair will be held in the area of the park known as Titanes, located at the corner of Tchaivosky and Bach.

St Mark’s Advent service

Join the congregation at St. Mark’s Anglican Church on Sunday, December 14, 6 p.m. for a beautiful one-hour-long service of lessons and carols. The service, based on one that originated at King’s College, Cambridge, England, will feature Advent hymns, villancicos (Mexican carols), and special choral anthems alternating with traditional bible readings, including the nativity.

Seasonal refreshments follow the service.

Anyone who would like to join the choir for this interdenominational event should call Debbie Rodriguez at (33) 3824-4675.
St. Mark’s is at Aztecas 836, Colonia Monraz.

Amsoc’s traditional Christmas Posada will be held from midday on Saturday, December 13. As in past years, the children from the Salvation Army Shelter in Tlaquepaque will entertain members and guests with a selection of carols and holiday songs.
