Foodie group

A year ago a group of expats in Guadalajara decided to get together once a month for an informal themed pot-luck to share home-cooked entrees and desserts in the pleasant surroundings of the American Society (Amsoc).  No judges or competition were involved, just a community formed on the love of food and cooking.

Over the past 12 months the group, named the American Cooking Club, has expanded and now has a combined cooking and auxiliary membership of 19.  The membership is primarily comprised of U.S and Canadian expats, but there are also a few Mexicans to introduce the group to local fare.

Members eagerly look forward to experiencing new tastes and visiting familiar old standards.  Dishes served over the last year have run the gamut from Turkey prepared in a Japanese Kamado Smoker, Marlin Ceviche, Champagne Chicken with Mushrooms, Black Bean Chili, BBQ Chicken Wings and Jiffy Corn Bread Casserole.

New members are always welcome and membership fees are very reasonable – 100 pesos for six months.  Members contributing prepared foods do not pay a participation fee.  Auxiliary members (partners or spouses of the cooking members) and guests can enjoy a delicious meal for a modest fee.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at Amsoc, Avenida San Francisco 3332, Colonia Chapalita. Set-up is at noon, lunch is served at 12:30 p.m.

Whispers of Fried Chicken, Mac & Cheese and Apple Pie have been overheard in discussions for preparations being made for the upcoming March 10 “Comfort Food” themed meeting.

The main goal of the group is to build a “community” where people share a common passion for food and cooking. The secondary goal is to contribute financially to both charitable organizations in Guadalajara and Amsoc, with monies raised by dues and guest fees.

Chalk art at the zoo

Guadalajara Zoo will host the fourth annual artistic festival “Animals de Colores” from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8. The event features chalk artists who create fantastic animal-themed designs on the zoo’s main walkway. This year’s theme is “the color of the animal kingdom.”

The public is invited to come and watch the artists as they work. The event is included in the entrance fee to the zoo which is 70 pesos for adults and 42 pesos for children.

Electronics disposal

The annual campaign to collect unwanted electronic items organized by the Jalisco Environmental Agency (Semadet) continues this weekend in Guadalajara. Collection points will be open on Friday, February 27 in the car park of the Parque Agua Azul, located at Avenida Las Palmas and Dr. R. Michel, by the Museo de Paleontologia and the C7 television channel at Francisco Rojas Gonzalez 155 (also on Saturday, February 28), while  the items can also be dropped off at Bosque Colomos car park on Avenida Patria on February 28 only.

Via RecreActiva

A recent Sunday Via RecreActiva set a new participation record: 215,446 people turned out to cycle, walk, jog, skateboard along the 28.2 kilometers of streets that are blissfully closed to snarling traffic for six consecutive hours.   Exactly how the officials at Guadalajara’s Municipal Sports Department calculated the figure down to the exact number is hard to fathom, but this newspaper will take them at their word.

The Via RecreActiva has also inaugurated the Pabelleon Compañero Fiel, an exclusive space for canines and their owners. Staffed by trained veterinarians, the service will be open Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the central divider on Chapultepec, corner of Mexicaltzingo, and provide free consultations regarding nutrition, parasites, inoculations, sterilizations and other matters.
