Mushroom Festival at Lion’s Club

The Circulo de Produccion farmer’s market cooperative hosts a Feria de Hongos (Mushroom Festival) Sunday, July 31 at the Club de Leones, Av. de los Leones 75, Colonia Tepeyac Casino, Zapopan.

Various local producers and distributors will be showing off a wide range of mushrooms and associated products.  As well as mushroom dishes to sample, there will be plenty of other food.  Music, activities for children and adults and talks by experts are also on the schedule.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Fine crafts at Casa Huichol

A full range of crafts produced by the indigenous people of northern Jalisco can be viewed and purchased at the Casa Huichol in Guadalajara 

Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prices start at around 35 pesos for the smallest pieces. Casa Huichol is a refuge for members of the Wixarika indigenous people who are obliged to travel to Guadalajara for medical treatment. It also serves as a cultural and educational center, promoting Huichol culture and traditions.

Cinemex opens in new mall

Movie theater chain Cinemex has opened a new complex in Plaza Sania, currently nearing completion at the corner of Avenida Vallarta and Juan Palomar y Arias, near the Minerva glorieta.

The complex boasts ten screens, three in 3D, and can seat up to 1,300 people. Novelties include extra room between seats, company representatives say.

A special deal is available for those who wish check out the cinemas through July 28, with all tickets priced at two for one. 

The plaza has parking for 700 vehicles. All clients of Cinemex will get free parking during the first month of operation (until August 15).

Cinemex is the sixth largest movie theater chain in Mexico, operating 2,565 screens in 295 facilities. 

Cinemex is also the first business to open in Plaza Sania. Other clients that have committed to the mall include Petco, Office Depot and Starbucks, as well as the city’s second Fresko supermarket. 

Planned as the new image of the Comercial Mexicana chain, Fresko opened its first store in the Urban Center La Rioja on Avenida Lopez Mateos Sur in April. That facility occupies 4,140 square meters, sells 25,000 products, and counts on 800 parking spaces.

Together with commercial space, Plaza Sania will also offer residential and office property.

Next year, Cinemex plans to open a new complex with 15 screens in Plaza Patria.

Zoo schedule changes

The Guadalajara Zoo will open seven days a week during school summer holidays.  During term time it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.  New additions in recent months include six red kangaroos in the Villa Australiana and five Gentoo penguins in the Antártida, el Reino de los Pingüinos attraction.

Dog & cat sterilizations 

The Universidad de Guadalajara and the Jalisco Department of Health (SSJ) holds a joint mass dog and cat sterilization drive Saturday, July 23, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the university’s Calle Dos, just off the northern periferico.  Pets should be older than two years of age, and have gone 12 hours without food or water prior to the surgery.  There is no charge.
