Guadalajara to host mega Tourism Fair

More than 5,500 visitors from 66 nations are expected to attend the 41st edition of Mexico’s leading tourism promotion fair, the Tianguis Turistico, which gets underway at Expo Guadalajara on Monday, April 25.

For decades held traditionally in the coastal city of Acapulco, the mammoth trade fair now roams the country, with a different host city selected each year since 2011.

Jalisco Tourism Secretary Enrique Ramos Flores says his agency is working hard to ensure that this year’s fair is “the best one ever.”

More than 3,000 exhibitors covering every branch of the nation’s tourism sector will fill 25,000 square meters of Expo Guadalajara’s floor space, 20 percent more than in previous editions.

The Jalisco state government has invested 40 million pesos in floor space, Ramos Flores confirmed this week. The state’s Pueblos Magicos (Magic Towns) will be heavily promoted and some 120 foreign journalists will be wined and dined and shown the delights of Jalisco’s touristic offerings during the four-day event, he said.

A key part of the trade fair will be the meetings between domestic and international buyers and Mexican tourism service providers. More business is done at the Tianguis Turistico than throughout the entirety of the rest of the year, fair organizers like to boast.

The fair also features a series of conferences on tourism related themes.

Hotels in the vicinity of Expo Guadalajara will be at full occupancy during the fair, said Ramos Flores, although he lamented the fact that some hotels have hiked up their room rates for the event.

While the Tianguis Turistico is not open to the general public, anyone who would like to register as a “buyer” should visit http://tianguisturisticomexico.com.mx.

Tianguis Turistico runs at Expo Guadalajara from Monday, April 25 to Thursday, April 28.
