Coming events on local road running calendar

Runners looking for opportunities to test their athletic prowess can look forward to a pair of local contests on the calendar for this month.

The second annual Carrera del Membrillo, sponsored by Chapala’s Comude Sports Commission, will be held on Sunday, August 10. The five-kilometer flat road race starts one block from the central plaza in Atotonilquillo, 8 a.m.

The competition is open to men and women, divided into three age categories. Cash prizes will be up for grabs in each class.

The registration fee is set at 80 pesos with payment by August 9, going up 100 pesos on the day of the race. To sign up or request full details, visit the Comude office at the Chapala Coliseum, Avenida Madero 268 next to the municipal soccer field, telephone 765-6501.

The Salvajes Ajijic running club breaks into the organization of mountain racing events with the Carrera Campanaria, set for Sunday, August 24.

The contest will have two components: the 14-kilometer Campanaria route and the 9.1 kilometer Copal Chino route, both initiating at the Ajijic Malecón, 9.a.m.

Each race has openings for men and women split into five age categories. A purse of 20,000 pesos will be split up among the top runners. Prompt payment of the 200-peso sign-up fee entitles the first 400 competitors to take home commemorative T-shirts and medals.

Register at GYM’nos Lake, Carretera Oriente 10-B, Ajijic, tel. 766-1278, or at Comude, as above. For further information in English call Daniel, cell 331-443-1050 or direct email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
