Food donations highlight Bridge Club’s February fund-raising efforts

The Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club is much more than simply a group of people getting together to play cards in the afternoon.

At the beginning of the year club member Grace Donovan approached the board of directors about assisting a home for abandoned children in Chapala.  The main objective of “Hope for Abandoned Children” is to provide a safe environment for the youngsters while striving to keep them in school so they can become self-sufficient once they enter adulthood.

Running the home is an expensive undertaking and the government provides no help. The children range in age from 8 to 23 and some have both physical and emotional needs. The oldest child suffers from cerebral palsy.

The Lake Chapala Duplicate Bridge Club made February its “Help Feed the Children Month.” A food bank was set up at the club to receive donations of everyday staples these children need. The first delivery of beans, rice, flour, sugar, cereal, cooking oil, caned goods and other items was made on February 8 and club officials say there is much more to come.

Anyone who would like to help these deserving children can drop off donations at the club located at Riberas at Hidalgo 79, (between Maskaras Clinic and Mom’s Restaurant) any weekday afternoon.

For those who would like to learn more about the game of bridge in a fun and friendly environment, the club offers lessons for both beginner and intermediate players on a regular basis.
