Chapala DAR chapter hosts national conference

Members of the Chapala chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosted the 39th Annual Mexico Conference at the Real de Chapala in Ajijic from Friday, February 20 to Tuesday, February 24. Lynn Young, the president-general of the National Society of the DAR, and more than 60 delegates and members from Mexico and the United States, attended the conference.

Conference activities included a memorial service for former members, a welcome party with many members of the local Thomas Paine Chapter, a Saturday luncheon and business meeting which were followed by an evening Mexican Fiesta which featured strolling mariachis, a performance by Son de Mexico, the ballet folklorico troupe from San Juan Cosala and fireworks.

June Matthews, regent of the Chapala chapter, planned tours with officers from Mexico City, Baja California, Guadalajara and San Carlos group to introduce the visitors to Jalisco. The activities included shopping in Tlaquepaque, a visit to the Jose Cuervo agave fields and distillery in Tequila, and a display of local fashions by Lois Cugini with lunch at Los Telares.

DAR, a women’s service organization founded to honor the patriots of the American Revolution, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. To promote its goals of historic preservation, education and patriotism, members donate millions of hours of community service each year. While there are chapters in the United States and 12 other countries, Mexico’s five chapters are more than in any other of the foreign countries.

Membership in the DAR is open to any woman – regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background – who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. The Chapala Chapter meets in Ajijic on the third Wednesday of each month. Anyone interested in joining should contact June Matthews by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
