Texas teen makes history

Bates Cannon will go down in history last weekend as Mexico’s first ever track hoe boarding stuntman.

The 14-year-old Texan was at lakeside visiting his grandparents, El Parque residents Richard and Sandy Owens, and couldn’t resist the temptation of getting in on the novel aquatic happening at the Ajijic malecon. Showing off strong skills from four years practice at wakeboarding, Bates said he got a kick out taking a spin in Lake Chapala pulled by a giant excavator, a different and more physically challenging experience than being towed behind a motor boat. Although the track hoe event was set back by bad weather on October 30, extreme sport enthusiasts enjoyed the action under sunny skies Saturday and Sunday.
