Weekly Worship - November 21, 2015

St. Andrew’s Anglican

After seven months of weekly stories of Jesus’ ministry, and before preparing again to celebrate His birth, the annual church calendar comes to an end on the day of “Christ the King” on Sunday, November 22. In a democratic, non-royal culture is “kingship” really a suitable metaphor for Jesus? At the 10 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon, “Power vs. Authority,” contrasts the Kingship of Jesus with that of every other king.

Sunday school is at 9:45 a.m. Refreshments are served in the garden after the service.  Every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items, which can be left in baskets by the church doors.

The Men’s luncheon is set for Wednesday, November 25, noon at CosinArt Restaurant in Ajijic.

St. Andrews is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Christ Church

Christ Church Episcopal will celebrate the Holy Eucharist, Rite II, at the Little Chapel by the Lake on Sunday, November 22, 9:30 a.m.  Fr. Danny Borkowski, the church’s vicar, will preside. His message, “Belonging to the Truth,” is based on John 18:33-37.

The congregations of Christ Church and the Little Chapel share a common coffee fellowship from 10:35 to 11:10 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

The Tuesday, November 24, 2 p.m., bible study sponsored by Christ Church Episcopal meets each week in the fellowship hall.

The Christmas Posada sponsored by the Little Chapel and Christ Church congregations is set for Sunday, December 13 in San Juan Tecomatlan. Those attending will leave in convoy from the Little Chapel at 12:15 p.m.

The Little Chapel

Frances Ciantar is the guest speaker for the Sunday, November 22, 11:15 a.m. worship service at the Little Chapel by the Lake.

The members of the Little Chapel meet for a time of fellowship after the Christ Church service.

The Little Chapel congregation is again sponsoring the traditional Mexican Posada for the children of San Juan Tecomatlan on Sunday, December 13, 1 p.m. Those interested in joining the traditional Christmas event can carpool from the church. For more information contact Wendy at (387) 763-5139 or Belva at (376) 766-2538.

The Little Chapel by the Lake is at Carretera 10 near the entrance to upper Chula Vista

Lake Chapala Baptist

“We have many sayings about what we say or should not say,” says Brother Bob Hendrick of Lake Chapala Baptist. “For example, ‘Don’t let your mouth overload your ….’ or, ‘It is better to remain silent and have people think you a fool than to open your mouth and prove them right.’

Hendrick continues: “Words, spoken or written, have impact. For every word in Hitler’s book ‘Mein Kampf,’ 125 lives were lost in World War II.  James, Jesus’ little brother, does not say to be silent. Rather, he says that a changed life should show up in a controlled tongue. Jesus said, ‘Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.’  And Forrest Gump wisely said, ‘That’s all I have to say about that.’

The congregation will begin James chapter three during the Sunday, November 22, 11 a.m. worship service.

Universal Unitarian

The Sunday, November 22, 10:30 a.m. presentation at the Unitarian Universalist fellowship by Jan Manning is titled “Jesus Potter Harry Christ: a Fascinating Comparison.”

Manning ‘s talk is based on Derek Murphy’s book “Jesus Potter Harry Christ,” which talks about the many similarities between ancient mythology and Christian Biblical mythology.  The service leader is Sue Boyzchuk.

The group now has an enhanced personal sound system to help those with hearing issues during the Sunday services.  Attendees may use headphones or ear buds connected to an FM radio or FM capable cell phone.

This is an English-speaking, inclusive, lay-led fellowship that meets on the west side of Ajijic in Plaza de la Ribera at Rio Bravo 10A, in a wheelchair-accessible facility.

San Andres English

The English-speaking congregation at San Andres Catholic Church in Ajijic will celebrate “Christ the Universal King” at its Sunday, November 22, 9 a.m. Mass.

Says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min.: “He did not claim to be only the King of the Jews.  His kingdom was not to be exclusive.  He is including all who are on the side of truth and who listen to his voice.”

The congregation and the residents of Ajijic’s barrios co-sponsor the activities on Monday, November 23, the second day of the nine-day fiesta honoring San Andres (St. Andrew), the patron saint of the town and the church.

New Hope

New Hope Church’s service on Sunday, November 22, 11 a.m. will feature the installation of elders.  Pastor Gene Raymer will address their responsibilities in a message based on 1 Peter 5:1-3.

To allow additional space for the growing congregation, the non-denominational group is now meeting in the home of the Brad Gorman family at Santa Isabela 175 in Riberas del Pilar. For directions call (376) 766-3435.

There will be refreshments for the early arrivals each week and a fellowship meal in a local restaurant following the service.  “These shared times of fellowship are some of the cohesive factors that keep us united in our faith,” says Raymer. “Faith is not just about spending an hour together. It’s about continuing that worshipful attitude throughout the week. These meals give us a chance to kick start our week.”

Buddhist Community

When the Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesday, November 25, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed by formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion. There will be a video presentation by Josh Korda entitled, “Sharing Our Emotions with Others.”

The sangha is at Guadalupe Victoria 101, suites A-B, in Ajijic. The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required. For additional information on the community and scheduled activities at heartofawareness.org or call Janet Reichert at (376) 766-6069.
