Moms cook, sell food to help with their children’s medical expenses

The mothers of the children helped by Niños Incapacitados hosted their semi-annual kermes (outdoor bazaar) at Cristiania Park in Chapala on Sunday, November 8.

Niños Incapacitados is an all-volunteer charitable organization helping lakeside children with needed medical appointments, procedures, medicines, evaluations, equipment and transportation. Twice a year, as the children’s mothers plan the event to thank all of the volunteers of Niños Incapacitados, they visit City Hall for permission to hold the bazaar in Chapala’s large public park.

This year, Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado also pledged the donation of the park’s revenue for the day, including the five-peso entry fee paid by all patrons.  He also turned up at the event, enjoyed the food sold by the mothers and made a generous donation.

The mothers of children assisted by the charity raise money at the kermes by selling tacos, pozole, hamburgers and hotdogs, as well as used clothing, household and electronic items donated by members from both the expat and Mexican communities. To entertain the children during the event, volunteer-supervised activities, including art projects, were planned.

The moms, who all wore hot pink shirts bearing the Niños Incapacitados logo and their child’s name, asked expats from the organization to handle the money and provide change during the event.  All of the funds raised from the kermes goes to the families of the children to help pay for medical expenses not completely covered by the organization.
