Lake in the limelight at old town hall

A full-day forum on ecological themes related to Lake Chapala will be held Wednesday, June 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia as a preamble to World Environment Day.

Admission is open to the public free of charge.

Planned under sponsorship of the Chapala and Jocotepec ecology departments, the program will open with a lecture on the importance of flora in Chapala’s ecosystem by Anastasio Barrios Rivera of the Jalisco Forest Council. Local artists Xill Fessenden, Daniel Palma, Juan Navarro and Antonio Cárdenas follow, at 10:20 a.m., with a panel discussion on culture in the lakeside area. At 11 a.m. professors at the Cetac and Conalep high schools will explore local environmental issues from an academic perspective. Students from various schools will take the floor at noon to close the event with expositions on relevant topics.

Established by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day is commemorated on June 5 with activities focused on raising public awareness to protect nature and the planet. The universal theme selected for 2016 is “fight against the illegal trade in wildlife.”
