LCS & Mountain Race
Ajijic’s annual international Chupinaya footrace (a half marathon) leaves from the town plaza and continues through the mountains above the village on Sunday, July 20.
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is supporting this event by providing drinking water for competitors. LCS board member Lois Cugini has arranged for volunteers to distribute bottles of water with the LCS logo at several points throughout the race circuit. In addition Cugini has organized a fleet of volunteers to transport the international runners to and from the airport.
The LCS is sponsoring their gardener Mauricio who is running in the 50-year-old and up category. He previously won in this category. Those interested in cheering on Mauricio and the many other entrants can easily follow the route from the plaza and up to the mountain trail by following the white directional marks painted on the streets.
Legendary Legion Events
American Legion Post 7 in Chapala continues to host a series of entertaining dinners and events. A smoked tenderloin dinner with all the trimmings is slated from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 21. It’s always a good idea to head over to the Post and purchase the 90-peso tickets in advance.
On Wednesday, July 23, the gals will be twisting and twirling in their poodle skirts while the guys will be dabbing on the Brylcream to recreate the perfect sexy 1950s do, complete with the duck’s tail in the back. All this fussing is what makes the Legion’s Annual Sock Hop fun with music by the Doo Wops. Dancers will take a breather at 6 p.m. when the sloppy joes, chips, slaw, and ice cream floats are served. Tickets are 110 pesos.
Some of the Legion’s events and meals are legendary. Monday, July 26 they’ll be serving their lakeside-famous barbecue brisket dinner. Cocktails are at 5 p.m. and dinner is served at 6 p.m., with tickets selling out quickly at 95 pesos.
Bling Mixer
The lakeside international business networking group (BLING) has changed the schedule for the July Mixer on Saturday, July 26. The group will meet at Laurie’s Market Café from 9 to 11 a.m. for a breakfast meeting. The group, hosted by Shannon Conshue will continue discussions of marketing and promotion.
Laurie’s Market Café is in Ajijic at Carretera 24, near the Oxxo.
Exploring Tequila and Molé
The Lake Chapala Society has developed a series of programs designed to help local expats enrich their understanding and appreciation of some of Mexico’s most iconic traditions. Each of the bi-cultural encounters will tease the senses of attendees with food, drink, music and the essence of Mexico. There will be more information available for the first two Experimenta México encounters soon. For now, save the time slot from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 8 to learn about Jalisco’s home grown drink, tequila.
The second session will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, August 22, return to LCS to explore mole, the favorite sauce made from a myriad of ingredients. Those who wish to attend should sign up at the LCS in advance. The cost for each encounter is 200 pesos for members and 250 pesos for nonmembers.
LCS Bus Trip
The regular LCS shopping trip to Guadalajara will leave from the sculpture in La Floresta at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 7 to visit Galerias Mall, which is anchored by Liverpool, Sears, Sanborns, and Best Buy. Bus passengers can also spend time in Costco, Sam’s, Super Walmart, and Mega. Several new stores and restaurants are opening in this area. The bus will return to La Floresta at 4 p.m.
Passengers can sign up at the ticket table at the LCS from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The cost is 250 pesos.
The LCS is sponsoring a Wednesday, August 20 trip so that members can browse and shop in the craft centers of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque. Some attendees may want to remain at the charming Tlaquepaque plaza, while the bus will drop others at the Forum Mall, with its Liverpool, Home Depot stores and food court. The bus leaves La Floresta at 9 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m.
Buddhist Community
The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community meets in Ajijic for meditation and dharma teachings each Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Encarnacion Rosas 9. The dharma talk on Wednesday, July 23, will be based on John Makransky’s DVD of “The Benefactor Moment.”
“Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring,” the 2003 South Korean movie about a Buddhist monastery that floats on a lake in a pristine forest is the planned film for Movie Night on Monday, July 21. Critic Roger Ebert included this film in his list of great movies.
Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian Buddhist practice community grounded in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Membership includes people with Zen, Tibetan, and Shambhala backgrounds as well as people who have no prior meditation experience .

eSun hands over scholarship check
Nyah Walters (in photo at right) presents a scholarship check from eSun Energy to Claudia Xitlali Ortega Villanueva. Ortega Villanueva will use the funds to attend the Instituto Superior Tecnologico de Chapala and continue her education Walters is a sales manager for eSun.
Hu Song
The HU Song is a contemplative spiritual exercise offering participants opportunities for insight, inspiration, and spiritual guidance. It is held at 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month with the location for the Saturday, July 19 HU Song changed to Centro Quiropractico at Carretera Poniente 25F, the strip center that also houses the Sky Fitness Gym, Monex and Berel Paintat the corner of Tempisque and the carretera.

Open Circle
Raul Ruiz will discuss “Utilizing Natural Hypnosis in Everyday Life” at the Sunday, July 20 session of Open Circle. Attendees meet at 10 a.m. for coffee, tea and sandwich bites with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Ruiz received a degree in psychology at ITESO, the Guadalajara Jesuit University. He worked for the state government, IMSS and Telmex during his first 12 years of professional practice. Since, he has taught in institutes that train psychotherapists and NLP practitioners, been a leadership trainer for executives of automobile companies in four cities in Mexico, and continued with psychotherapy with individuals, couples and families.
His approach to psychotherapy and organizational development is primarily derived from systemic thinking, brief therapy, therapy focused on solutions, neuro-linguistic programming, cognitive therapy and Milton H. Erickson’s client-centered naturalistic approach to hypnosis. Ruiz recently moved to Riberas del Pilar where he does consultations in addition to maintaining his Guadalajara office.
San Andrés English Mass
“The Lord, Our Merciful Judge” is the homily topic selected by Rev. Basil G. Royston, D.Min., for the 9 a.m. English Mass on Sunday, July 20 at the Templo de San Andrés in downtown Ajijic.
During the Holy Mass the recently trained Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will be installed and presented with a Crucifix as a symbol of their office, an ecclesiastical identity card from the archdiocese, and an official letter of certification from the Archbishop of Guadalajara, Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega.
Little Chapel by the Lake
Donald Hauser, a long-time resident at Lake Chapala, will be the guest speaker at the 11:15 a.m. worship service of the Little Chapel by the Lake on Sunday, July 20.
Prior to the worship service members of Christ Church Lakeside and the Little Chapel will share a refreshment period. This fellowship begins when the Anglican service concludes at 10:45 a.m.. Following the Little Chapel’s worship service, members of the congregation meet for fellowship and food at a local restaurant.
The Little Chapel by the Lake is an interdenominational congregation that provides worship and praise for all Christian believers. The church is on the mountain side of the Carretera just east of the Chula Vista golf course.
Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 20 at the Little Chapel by the Lake. Deacon Rob Wells’ message topic is “Good Seed” based on Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43.
Christ Church Lakeside and the Little Chapel by the Lake share a coffee fellowship between their two services from about 10:25 a.m. to 11:10 a.m.
Wells is leading a Bible Study at in the fellowship hall of the Little Chapel by the Lake at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays. The current topic is the Gospel of Mark. Each session lasts about an hour with Wells using
“The Jerusalem Bible” as his study text because of its ample notes and commentary.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
“Thank goodness for evil” sounds like a strange message from a church. “Pearls and Ulcers,” Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon for the 10 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church on Sunday, July 20, seeks to wrestle with the possible purposes of the evil that surrounds and dwells in every human being.
The discussion of this provocative premise is certain to spill over into the weekly time of welcome, refreshment, and fellowship in the garden following the service. The bilingual Sunday School session begins each week at 9:45 a.m.
