Open Circle

Those attending Open Circle presentations gather in the back gardens of the Lake Chapala Society at 10 a.m. each Sunday for refreshments and fellowships.

The program on Sunday, May 31, “How We Got To This,” by Jim Spivey will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Spivey looks at and combines theories and rules of science, religion, beliefs, awareness, consciousness and evolution to make the point of his talk.

Spivey has a background rich in hypnosis, psychology, electronics, nuclear weapons, medical imaging equipment, plus a lifetime of seeking answers that integrate science and metaphysics.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Only once each year does Christian worship focus on a doctrine rather than on a person or event. Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon during the 10 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church on Sunday, May 31 is titled, “Experience vs. Argument.” Welty helps the congregation imagine Jesus on a brightly-lit stage engaging in a debate with Nicodemus, as the spectators try to get a handle on the intricacies of this Christian doctrine and why it matters.

Children’s Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday. The worship service is followed by fellowship and refreshments in the garden.

The feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes weekly donations of non-perishable items such as beans, rice, lentils, pasta, salt, and oil, which can be left in the baskets by the church doors.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Christ Church

Christ Church Lakeside will observe the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity during the Sunday, May 31, 9:30 a.m. worship service at The Little Chapel by the Lake (Carretera 10 in Chula Vista). Fr. Danny Borkowski will preside during the service and Deacon Rob Wells will present the sermon, “Are You Ashamed of Jesus?” based on John 3:1-17. White vestments will be worn in honor of the great feast. (With the exception of the Feast of Christ the King and All Saints Sunday, on the first Sunday in November the liturgical color is green, a symbol of hope.)

The congregations of Christ Church Lakeside and The Little Chapel share a common coffee fellowship time between the services, from about 10:35 until 11:10 a.m.

Little Chapel

Lay Sunday will be observed by the members of the interdenominational congregation of The Little Chapel by the Lake on Sunday, May 31, 11:15 a.m. “The Little Chapel is blessed with several individuals who are serious students of God’s word,” says Rev. Gene Raymer. “I like to think that we model ourselves after the first century Christian church where more than one disciple spoke to the people. Sharing the pulpit is our way of doing that.

Frances Ciantar, a former missionary, will deliver the message on May 31. The congregation will continue their fellowship and conversation over a meal at a local restaurant.

The series “Experiencing God” will continue in the fellowship hall on Tuesday, June 2, 7 p.m. One in the film series “The Chronicles of Narnia” will be shown on Wednesday, June 3, 4:30 p.m. Admission and refreshments are free for this movie event.

The Little Chapel by the Lake is on the mountain side of the Carretera just east of the golf course in Chula Vista.

San Andrés English

Fr. Basil G. Royston, Min. D. says he will “look to Abba, Father” during the Sunday, May 31, 9 a.m. English Mass at San Andrés Catholic Church.  “We celebrate our baptism in the name of the Trinity as a result of which we have received the spirit of sons and daughters and are privileged to call the great God of glory and majesty our Father.”

During the worship time on Sunday, June 6, members of the English congregation will bring their monthly offering of nonperishable food items, diapers, paper products, cleaning supplies and other items to help stock the pantry at Villa Infantil, the orphanage that is home to 30 young children.

Unitarian Universalist

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service on Sunday, May 31, 10:30 a.m. will feature a presentation by guest speakers Karen Miles and Keith Coates, who explore the topic “Dealing with Dementia: Two Perspectives.”

Coates was the primary caregiver for his wife, Carol, during her eight-year journey through Alzheimer’s disease, when she was in care both in Canada and Ajijic. He will focus on the stress and strain of caregiving and touch on ways in which caregivers must take care of themselves to better help their loved ones.

Miles has been diagnosed with vascular dementia and she will share her experience in receiving the diagnosis and her challenges of charting an upbeat path through what often is a discouraging disease process.

A coffee hour will follow the meeting which is held at Plaza de la Ribera, Rio Bravo 10A.

Members of the group search for truth along many paths. They gather around common moral values that include the inherent worth and dignity of every person. They are a caring, liberal, open-minded community that encourages others to seek their own spiritual path wherever it leads. For further information visit the group’s webpage at www.uuflc.org.

Buddhist Community

During the Heart of Awareness Community meeting on Wednesday, June 3, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed by formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion at 4:30 p.m. The teaching will be a pre-recorded talk by Tara Brach, a leading Western teacher of Buddhist meditation, emotional healing and spiritual awakening.
