Who Rescued Who … The Calendar is a great gift for all dog-lovers on one’s Christmas list. It features photos from both volumes of “Who Rescued Who: Tales of Street Dogs and People Who Love Them.”
Barbara Harkness, who co-authored both books, will be at Café Corazon at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) on Saturday, December 5 and Saturday, December 12, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the books and the calendars. The books sell for 250 pesos and the calendars 200. The package price for both is 400 pesos.
On other days calendars are available exclusively at Yves Restaurant. Harkness shares the profits with the Ajijic Rotary Dog Assisted Therapy program (ARDAT), Operacion Amor Spay and Neuter Program and Guardians of the Planet Education Program. This is a gift that gives.
Auxiliary Sale
The ladies of American Legion Unit 7 at their 2015 annual Christmas luncheon and gift exchange at Gaucho Tequila. Join the ladies at Post 7 on Saturday, December 5, 9 a.m. when their Arts and Crafts and Take and Bake Sale opens.
Ajijic Cares
Area residents gather in the amphitheater on the Ajijic malecon on December 1, 6 p.m. to mark World AIDS Day. The event was organized by Ajijic Cares, a local group that shares educational information and AIDS awareness at lakeside,
Bomberos Soccer
The Lakeside Assistance Group is hosting a benefit soccer match featuring the Tecnologico school against the Chapala Bomberos (firefighters) on Sunday, December 6, noon in the Cruz Azul field, across the street from Salvador’s Restaurant in Ajijic.
Admission to the game is 50 pesos. The proceeds are earmarked for shipping of equipment and medical supplies from Canada. These will benefit the Chapala unit, as well as others in neighboring municipalities.
Tickets are available in Chapala at American Legion Post 7, Bar Tomas and the Comude sports delegation office. Ajijic ticket sales locations include Manix Restaurant, Diane Pearl Colecciones and the fire station on the Libramiento.
Open Circle
Margaret Van Every presents the Open Circle program on Sunday, December 6, 10:30 a.m. in the back patio of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).
Van Every is Open Circle’s official moderator and jokester, and currently the group’s program coordinator. This weekend she presents “Sacred and Profane Poetry of Margaret Van Every.”
Van Every is the author of three books of poetry: “A Pillow Stuffed with Diamonds,” “Saying Her Name” and “Holding Hands with a Stranger.”
Her program introduces poems that are whimsical and irreverent, as well as others that pose serious questions about life.
LCS Seminar
LCS members are invited to attend the Tuesday, December 8, noon-1:15 p.m. learning seminar featuring neurologist Tony Wyss-Coray.
Fred Harland moderates the session with Wyss-Coray’s theme,” How young blood might help reverse aging.”
The fountain of youth may not be as far-fetched as once thought. Wyss-Coray shares research that shows how old mice, when given a common blood supply with a young mouse, demonstrated tissue rejuvenation in the pancreas, liver and heart. “What I am most excited [about] is that this may even apply to the brain,” he says.
Wyss-Coray is running a small clinical study in which adul ts with mild Alzheimer’s are receiving injections of plasma from 20-year-olds.
Lakeside Progressives
Diane Bucaro and John DeWaal will give presentations at the Tuesday, December 8, 4 p.m. meeting of the Lakeside Progressives.
Bucaro reviews the movie “Cowspiracy,” a documentary revealing the devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on the planet.
DeWaal follows with a presentation on the climate change challenge and why Bernie Sanders should be elected president of the United States. A hat will be passed during the meeting to fund the Progressives’ advertising campaign for Senator Bernie Sanders.
The local group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Peacock Garden Restaurant on Colon in Ajijic. This is a group of like-minded people looking for progressive solutions to problems not being addressed by the major political parties.

Benefit Dinner
La Ola, the children’s orphanage near Jocotepec, will receive the proceeds from the Tuesday, December 8, 5-7 p.m. Christmas Benefit Dinner at Tango in Ajijic.
Entertainment for the evening will be provided by the children who attend the Academie de Ukulele. A cash bar will be available.

Health Day Changes
Important revisions are being made to the schedule of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Health Day scheduled on the society grounds on Wednesday, December 9.
LCS is sponsoring two presentations on the Seguro Popular health care system, as well as two sign-up periods.
Julio Alberto Martinez Cisneros from the Centro de Salud Ajijic will host the presentations in the LCS Sala. The first will be held at 9 a.m. with sign up set for 10 a.m. The second begins at 10 a.m., with sign up at 11 a.m.
Space at the presentations will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Those attending do not have to be members of LCS.
Anyone wishing to enroll in the Seguro Popular program will need to bring originals and copies of their immigration card (only permanent or temporary may join), CURP number, passport, and proof of address (telephone or electric bill). Enrollment in the program is free and there is no age limit.
The previously scheduled CPR class has been postponed until January.
The schedule of Health Day vaccinations, health screenings and events remains the same as previously publicized and promoted. Flyers with the schedule are available at the LCS office.
Canadian Club
Members and guests of the Canadian Club of Lake Chapala will gather at La Nueva Posada for the group’s annual Christmas gathering on Wednesday, December 9, 3 p.m.
“This is the perfect time for us to renew old acquaintances, make new friends, and rejoice in the season,” says Barbara Wills, club president. “To add to the festive atmosphere, DJ Howard plays Christmas music and our members and guests bring a beautiful array of finger foods to share.”
Annual Canadian Club membership is 200 pesos with members receiving four 25-peso bar coupons. Guests (not only Canadians) attending the event must pay an admittance fee of 50 pesos and will receive one drink coupon.
Army/Navy Game
American Legion Post Seven’s second annual Army/Navy football game party takes place on Saturday, December 12. It is gearing up to be an afternoon of great sporting rivalry, along with a series of fun events, including face painting, a gift basket raffle and pools.
“We aren’t charging admission for this event,” says Chairperson Kay McCowen. “Those attending will bring snacks like peanuts or pretzels and chips and dip to share. Those who work up an appetite for more can get in line for the regular Legion Fish Fry from 3-6 p.m.”
American Legion Post 7 is at Morelos 114 in Chapala.
Singles Bash
The 4th Annual Holiday Bash sponsored by LCS Singles is on Saturday, December 12, 3-7 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society grounds. The party promises to be a fun event with raffles, great music and food.
Everybody is welcome to this event, not just singles. It includes a festive dinner with all the trimmings, and dancing to Noe and the Classics.
Tickets are 230 pesos in advance, or 270 pesos at the door. Available at LCS, Cugini’s Boutique, Sweets and Treats Ajijic, or Judy at 766-0818.
Toy and Food Run
The local expat motorcycle club, Los Gueros, hosts the second annual toy run and food drive on Saturday, December 19. The event begins at 10 a.m. with registration of an unwrapped toy and non-perishable food items at American Legion Post 7 in Chapala, where breakfast will be available for the bikers until they roll out at noon for the ride to La Ola, the orphanage near Jocotepec.
Says organizer Lee Myers, “The kids love hearing the roar as we get near and they are so excited when all the bikes pull into the driveway. Last year about 25 area riders participated. This year, it looks like many more will be on the trip and will help with the barbecue lunch and Santa’s visit to the kids. It’s a great time for the children, and even better for the riders. We’re paid with hugs and smiles.”
Myers adds that the food collected will also help stock the pantries of Love in Action, the Chapala children’s home. Those who wish to participate in the day’s activities or donate food or toys can contact Myers at (33) 3140-7003.
Holiday Raffle
Tickets are on sale for a December 31 raffle for a square coffee table handcrafted in the Hope House woodworking shop. The table features a tile top and cabriolet legs in a warm maple tone.
Patrons can see the table and buy tickets while shopping in Upscale Resale Bazar, the charity shop in Riberas del Pilar. The store sells donated and consigned items to help support children living at Hope House and Love in Action. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
