US Senate committee approves US ambassador

After a long delay, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved U.S. State Department official Roberta Jacobson as the new U.S ambassador to Mexico.

Some Republican senators, as well as Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, held up the nomination because  Jacobson led the negotiations on normalization of ties with Cuba.

Six Republicans voted against Jacobson, including presidential candidate Marco Rubio, who represents Florida.

The full Senate must now approve her nomination.
