Vallarta women to start micro-businesses

Tourism operators in the Puerto Vallarta area have jumped aboard a project that will see some 500 local women start their own micro businesses producing soap, shampoo and cream for hotels guests.

The project is being spearheaded by Prospera, an organization that supports indigenous women and those in vulnerable situations.

The women are being given training in the production of the items, whose base materials will be locally sourced.

So far only hotels affiliated with the group known as the Network of Sustainable Hotels have signed on to the project. They include the Royal Suites Punta Mita, Tranquila Resort and Spa and the Grand Palladium resort.

The women are expected to earn around 7,000 pesos a month from the venture.
