Barra de Navidad’s double whammy

Destroyed by Hurricane Jova in 2011, Barra Navidad had only just got back on its feet, after millions of dollars had been invested in rehabilitating the decimated beach zone.

Now Barra de Navidad is back to square one.

Once again the beach has been left with virtually no sand. Recently constructed beachfront walkways lie shattered in heaps of rubble.  Walls have fallen, rocks are strewn everywhere, businesses torn to shreds.

Among the restaurants suffering damage: Bananas, Mar y Tierra,  Jardín de Chuy, Sunset, Panchos, Nachos, Sea Master, Puertas del Sol and Jarro Beach.

Televisa reported eateries open in Barra this week were offering visitors heavily discounted meals.

Hotels suffering damage included Alondra, Barra de Navidad, Tropical, Bogavante, Las Palmas Bungalows and Casa Chips.

“Llanitos,” a grain ship, became beached at Punta Graham, near Barra de Navidad.   The vessel had started to leak oil but is now in a stable condition, according to the Mexican Navy.
