The Tequila Express tourist train has been suspended until further notice, according to Ferromex, the national railway company.
In a press release, Ferromex said it intended to upgrade the carriages used for the service, which has operated between Guadalajara and Amatitan on Sundays for the past 17 years.
Ferromex did not say when the service would resume, nor whether the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce will continue to manage the attraction.
In recent years, the Tequila Express has faced competition from the Cuervo Express operated by the Cuervo drinks giant. Their train runs all the way through to the town of Tequila, whereas the Tequila Express stops in Amatitan, offering tourists a short bus ride to visit to the Hacienda San Jose del Refugio distillery.
Both services provide a leisurely train ride through pretty agave fields, unlimited liquor, a distillery tour, a meal and folk dancing.
