British Society

Sue Morris will speak on: “The NHS Lottery: Do they practice euthanasia?” at the next luncheon of the Lakeside British Society, Saturday, May 7, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant in Ajijic.

American Legion

There are still tickets available for the American Legion Post 7 celebration of Mothers’ Day, Sunday, May 8. A social hour begins 3 p.m. and the pork rib dinner at 4 p.m. with live music. Cost is 200 pesos; 100 to members that are mothers. Tickets are available at the Legion, #114 Morelos Chapala.

Open Circle

Sunday, May 8 Dra. Susana Lua Nava will present “Palliative Care in Jalisco,” at Open Circle, 10:30 a.m., in the Lake Chapala Society Garden.

Dra. Lua will describe what palliative care is, why it is needed, and the status of palliative care in Jalisco. She is dedicated to creating a palliative care and hospice model for Mexico that addresses the needs of patients and their families.

Dra. Lua is the founder of Juntos Contra el Dolor [United Against Pain], the only 24/7 palliative care hospital in Jalisco. She is a graduate of Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara and spent three years obtaining a palliative care specialty in the Canary Islands with Dr. Marcos Gomez Sancho, the most highly regarded exponent of palliative care in the Spanish-speaking world. Dra. Susana is also a nun and an author. Aside from serving hospital patients, 65 patients at home, and consulting, she teaches seminars on palliative care for professionals and the public. Juntos Contra el Dolor serves all regardless of socio-economic status, age, race, or religion.

Buddhists

The Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesdays. Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed by a formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion at 4:30 p.m. May ll, there will be the second of five Tricycle audio presentations: “Understanding Conscious Experience.” 
Drop in meditation is on Sunday and Monday, May 8 and 9, from 9 to 10 a.m., and Thursday, May 12, from 11 a.m to noon.  A Drop In Practice/Study group meets every Friday from 2 to 4 pm.  All are welcome.
A yoga class suitable for all levels of experience is offered at Heart of Awareness on Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. A donation of 50 pesos is requested for the class.
Registration is open for a Live Stream Retreat with Pema Chodron on May 20-22. The weekend includes talks, guided meditations and questions and answer sessions with her. The registration fee for sangha members is 350 pesos and 450 pesos for non-members. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, May 18. Lake Chapala Garden Club

The Lake Chapala Garden Club is launching its first “Bring Your Gardener To Lunch”  event Wednesday, May 18, noon, at La  Nueva Posada  Hotel, in Ajijic.  

Club organizers hope this invitation will demonstrate how much garden lovers here appreciate their gardeners. Over lunch a talented bi-lingual expert gardener will create a living sculpture.

LCS bus trip

Thursday, May 19, The LCS Bus heads to Gallerias Mall. Major retailers include Best Buy, Sears, restaurants Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang and more, also shop Costco, Sams and Super Walmart. 

Cost for the trip is 300 pesos for members and 350 pesos for non-members. The bus departs promptly at 9 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.

Lakeside Singers

The Lakeside Singers will lead a sing-along on Wednesday, May 11, 4:30 p.m. at Alicia’s La Paloma assisted living home, Juan Alvarez 56 in Ajijic, tel: 766-3152. The melodious event will be followed by dinner at a place to be determined for those who don’t want to cook.  Belva Velazquez will meet people who need a ride at The Little Chapel by the Lake between 4 and 4:15 PM.

May 25 the group be at OHANA’s in San Juan Cosala at 4:30 p.m. If you want to join in, just show up.

Gourmet food fest

Local foodies will have a chance to tuck in and enjoy two full days of high living at Festival Gourmet Panorama, set to run Saturday, May 14, 11:30 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday, May 15, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Chapinaya events center, located off the Chapala-Jocotepec highway, a few kilometers west of Ajijic. 

The event will showcase the culinary talents of guest chefs from top notch restaurants such as lakeside’s Jardín de Ninette, St. Remy du Lac, and Guadalajara dining spots Alaríz, El Burgués, Eulogio and La Posta. Bar service will be set up for sampling an array of fine wines, craft beers, liquors and mixed cocktails. 

Maru Toledo, an expert on regional cuisine, will be on hand with the group Mujeres del Maiz to demonstrate the preparation of a Jalisco-style mole on Saturday and the traditional method of making corn dough on Sunday. The program also encompasses an art exhibit and live music, all in a spectacular setting with sweeping views of Lake Chapala.

LCS fashion show

Designs by Alma Gutierrez will be on display at a fashion show at LCS Saturday, May 28, 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be catered by Roberto´s Restaurant with a cash bar. Surprise raffles and the exhibition and sale of pieces by the LCS Children’s Art Program are also planned.Tickets at LCS and Diane Pearl fare 200 pesos.

Support groups

Professional councilor Valerie Rhoda runs a gamut of free support groups at Lakeside.

Loss and Moving Forward Support Group is for people who have lost a life partner through death or divorce or a parent or child. Through a circle of support, the group will focus on the roller coaster of emotions experienced and ways to positively harness those emotions towards creating a new life. The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 2:30 to 4 pm.

Join with others to share your pain & create a meaningful future for yourself at the Separation/Divorce Support Group. Meetings are on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1pm. 

The Womens’ Cancer & Life Threatening Disease Support Group is a place to get comfort and information from people who really understand what you’re experiencing. It’s open to people in treatment, and recent survivors. The group meets the second and fourth Monday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lake Chapala Birders

Lake Chapala Birders group will meet to hike the Allen Lloyd Trail Tuesday, May 10, 8 p.m. and then head to Sunrise restaurant for breakfast and to complete the birdlist.

The Global Big Day of bird counting is Saturday May 14. Birdwatchers are asked to go outside and count as many birds as they can on that day and report it so it can be entered into the eBird database. For more information call John Keeling at 766-1801. See their website: chapalabirders.org.
