Contemporary Dance
The 18th Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea Onésimo González kicks off with two shows: “Touching Time” by the Shin Eunju Dance Company from South Korea on October 23 and “Ballenas, historias de Gigantes,” by Larumbe Danza (Spain) on October 25. Jazz at Lincoln Center
Mexican jazz drummer Antonio Sanchez performs in in the Jazz at Lincoln Center series sponsored by the University of Guadalajara. Sanchez composed the original music for “Birdman,” last year’s winner of the Oscar for Best Picture. Sanchez has toured with Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, been part of the Pat Metheny Group and recorded three well-received solo albums. He has lived in New York since 1999.

GR RECOMMENDS:‘Rigoletto’ & ‘Madame Butterfly’
November sees eight performances of two of the world’s most famous operas staged at Guadalajara’s stately Degollado Theater – Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto” and Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly.” Ragnar Conde is the stage director and Marco Parisotto directs the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in both works, which will feature top-class international and Mexican performers. The Jalisco State Choir also features in both operas.
Notable artists include U.S. baritone Michael Chioldi as Rigoletto and Russian soprano Svetlana Aksenova as Cio-Cio San in “Madame Butterfly.”
Staging full operas are an expensive undertaking but the Jalisco Culture Department is keeping ticket prices down to a reasonable level to ensure full houses at all the shows.
