Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

A Beethoven special commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Degollado Theater.

Marco Parisotto conducts Beethoven’s Leonore Overture Nº 3 in C major, Op. 72b and the majestic Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125.  He is joined by Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska, alto Cassandra Zoe Velasco, tenor Cesar Delgado and bass Grigory Soloviov. Also featuring the Zapopan Choir and other assorted singers, all under the direction of Timothy Ruff Welch.

Musical Mondays

Palcco has scheduled three Musical Monday recitals this month featuring talented international musicians. November 7: Ricardo Calderon (tenor) and Alain del Real (piano). November 14: Patricia Garcia Torres (piano). November 21: Michelle Cann (piano) and Ray Furuta (flute).

Siddhartha the Musical

An original musical production by Chu Un Temple, and directed under the Fo Guang Shan Academy of Art of the Philippines. The musical is an adaptation of “The Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha,” written by Buddhist monk Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order in Taiwan.

Blues Jam

Internationally acclaimed blues harmonica player Bruce Ewan will join Mexican blues guitarist Werther Ellerbrock and his band for a jam session.

Paco Padilla

Local folk singer Paco Padilla celebrates his 40th year in the music business with a special concert at the Teatro Degollado to benefit Guadalajara’s Civil Hospitals.  Padilla, who is also a respected ceramics artisan, is known for his urban narratives, indigenous themes and humor.

Folk dance

The Ballet Folklórico de la Universidad de Colima presents its show “Orgullo De La Tierra Mia” (Pride of My Land).

Russian troupe, Ballet Estatal De Rusia Mari El, are back in town to present “Romeo and Juliet.”

Othello

Ragnar Conde is the scenic director, while Marco Parisotto conducts the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, in a full-blown production of Verdi’s opera “Othello,” based on Shakespeare’s famous work. A stellar cast is headed by U.S. tenor Issachah Savage in the title role and Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska as Desdemona. U.S. baritone Michael Chioldi plays Iago. Also featuring the Zapopan Choir, directed by Timothy Ruff Welch.

The China National Traditional Orchestra, also called China National Orchestra, is a 110-piece orchestra of traditional Chinese musical instruments with an accompanying folk choir.

Finzi Pasca

Italian acrobatic theatrical company formed in 2011 that develops artistic projects which broaden the “Theatre of the Caress” spectrum, a theatrical technique based on the invisible gesture and the state of lightness.  This is the company’s second visit to Guadalajara to present the show La Verità, a homage to surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Live from the Met

The New York Met presents a simulcast of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s breakthrough opera L’Amour de Loin, in a dazzling new production by Robert Lepage, featuring glimmering ribbons of LED lights that extend across the length of the stage and over the orchestra pit. Eric Owens is the knight on a quest of love and Susanna Phillips is his lover on the other side of the sea. Conductor Susanna Mälkki makes her Met debut.

A concert featuring the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra playing the compositions of the three finalists in the Premio Nacional de Composición Orquestal 2016 (National Prize for Orchestral Composition).

The Nutcracker

Perennial seasonal staple ballet performed by the Ballet de Jalisco, the state’s only full-time, professional dance troupe, along with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.  Based on  a book by Marios Petipa, with music by Tchaikovsky, this ballet is always a delight for both children and adults.

GR RECOMMENDS: French jazz duo

The French Jazz duo of Vincent Peirani (accordion) and Emile Parisien (sax) is an electric combination, reviewers agree. “Peirani’s gift for melody and muscular rhythmic pulse complemented by the beguiling, wholly personal sound of Parisien’s soprano saxophone,” said one. For their Guadalajara gig, expect to hear pieces by Sidney Bechet, Henry Lodge, Mills Irving, Duke Ellington and others.
