Ribera arts review - May 23, 2014

“The Long Weekend,” Canadian playwright Norm Foster’s hilarious look at love and marriage, is the next production of  the Naked Stage Theater.

The play runs Friday, May 23; Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, The bar opens at 3 p.m. and the box office at 3:15 p.m. Shows start at 4 p.m.

The Naked Stage is located at Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic. Turn left on Rio Bravo and drive about two blocks toward the lake. The theater is behind Daniel’s Restaurant.

Poetry festival

Local poets and invited guests will take part in Chapala’s contribution to the “Palabra en el Mundo” International Poetry Festival on Saturday, May 24.

This festival sprung up in Havana, Cuba in 2007 and now encompasses towns and cities in more than 30 countries, which have committed to organizing public poetry interventions during a two-week period, from May 12-25.

The Chapala festival is organized by the Colectivo Cultural El Quijote de Chapala and the Department of Culture in Jocotepec. The festival’s theme is “La Poesía como Acción Universal por la Paz” (Poetry as a Universal Action for Peace).
Saturday’s festival takes place in Chapala’s main plaza (Plaza Principal), starting a 5 p.m.

 

Dirty Hueso

The  Dirty Hueso, a local guitar and flute  trio specializing in the genre of world fusion music, will perform  Saturday, May 24, 8 p.m.  at La Rueda Coffee House and Gallery at Porfirio Diaz 120 in San Juan Cosala

 

A Capella singers

Ensamble Vocal Universitario from the University of Guadalajara Music  Department will appear at a gala concert scheduled for Thursday, May 29, 8 p.m. at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic (CCA). The acclaimed choral group performs a capella, tapping on a diverse repertoire that ranges from popular songs of Latin America and Mexico to classical compositions and sacred music.

The event is programmed in conjunction with the kick-off of a fund-raising campaign to support the purchase a piano for the CCA.  Admission is open to the public free of charge.

 

Auditions

Lakeside Little Theatre is kicking off the 50th Season with a bonus production, Joe DiPietro’s “The Last Romance,” which will be performed August 29 through September 7. The proceeds from this seventh play of the season will be used to purchase of new sound and lighting equipment.   
Auditions for the romantic comedy about love in the over-65 crowd will be held by director Ann Swiston on Friday June 6 at the theater. She is looking for two senior women, one senior man and one young man.  Registration for the auditions will be at 9:30 a.m. with auditions starting promptly at 10 a.m.

Gecko Gallery

Danny Palma, sculptor and owner of the Gecko Gallery, has announced the opening of a dual exhibit on Friday, June 6, 6 p.m.  The gallery is located at Ocampo 61 in Ajijic.

Two artists will be exhibiting:  Jill Flyer, photo artist  and Jeanne Campos, contemporary acrylic artist.  Both artists are known for their Mexican themed work.

Campos has been painting since 1989 and is known for her acrylic on canvas work in a variety of different subjects.  She also has limited edition prints that are all hand signed and numbered.  She has exhibited in Arizona, California and Mexico where she now resides.  Check her work out at  www.jccolors.com.

Jill Flyer has exhibited many times in the Ajijic and Chapala area and also at the Ex Convento del  Carmen, Guadalajara and multiple galleries in the United States.  She has been a Merit Award winner in Black & White magazine both in 2011 and in the February 2014 Special Edition. Wine and botanas will be served.

 

Folk Art Sale

The Feria Maestros del Arte is hosting a folk art sale at the July 3 Lake Chapala Society CAN/AM Celebration on the Society grounds. The Feria is filling their table with donated pre-owned and pre-loved Mexican folk art.

The proceeds from these sales will offset the expenses of hosting the annual November show that brings Mexico’s top maestros to Lake Chapala. Artisans never pay a fee to participate in the Feria. There is no booth fee, they do not pay a percentage of their sales to the organization, they are housed and fed by local hosts.
