What Mexico googled in 2014

The new iphone 6, the capture of Chapo Guzman and President Enrique Peña Nieto’s political reforms were among the most popular Google searches in Mexico for 2014. The search engine’s platform “The Year in Search” also reveals that Mexicans were worried about Ebola and the case of the disappeared students of Ayotzinapa.

Celebrity deaths featured heavily as well. Late Mexican comic Chesperito trended, and the loss of Latin American literary giants Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jose Emilio Pacheco made the list.

The solemnity was tempered by the popularity of soccer’s World Cup, which led to a broad range of popular searches. Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa trended, alongside the ever popular, “No era penal,” (that wasn’t a penalty) a phrase referring to Holland player Arjen Robben who was accused of cheating against Mexico and forcing their elimination from the competition.

The platform also suggests the country is sticking to its roots. Holy Week topped Black Friday, known as Buen Fin in Mexico, and Day of the Dead made the list instead of Halloween.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence topped the list of most trending person in the United States. The deaths of comedians Robin Williams and Joan Rivers also dominated.          Stephen Woodman
