Friday, May 6

Tuesday, May 10

La Bodega is hosting a new trio called The Lovers featuring Jonathan Guzman on vocals and guitar, Sergio Casas on vocals and bass and Diego on drums for Mexican Mothers’ Day. Call 766-1002 for reservations. The music starts at 7:30 p.m.

String Quartet

The Cuarteto Naó string quartet will appear at the Centro Cultural González Gallo Sunday, May 8, 4 p.m., to perform a repertoire of Mexican music, including arrangements of traditional songs of the region and pieces by renowned composers. Admission is set at 100 pesos. 

Thursdays at the station

Sweet sounds will fill the central hall of Chapala’s former railway station as the Centro Cultural González Gallo hosts a series of concerts on consecutive Thursdays during May, all starting at 7 p.m. Pianist Rosa Navarro is on the bill for May 12 to perform compositions by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Grieg, Debussy and Ponce. Coro Son y Alma follows on May 19, with a program of early era Mexican songs. Finally, on May 26, Taller G. Verdi presents La Opera son Puros Cuentos, a selection of famous arias, admission 60 pesos.

Sculpture in the limelight

Luz y Sombra (Light and Shadow) an exhibit of sculptures made from wood, clay and recycled materials opens Friday, May 13, 5 p.m., at Casa Luna, Ocampo 22, Ajijic. The show includes three-dimensional creations by Rigoberto Navarro, Betto Rock and other lakeside artists.

GALA focus on families 

Generaciones, a collection of portraits of Ajijic families created by photographer Xill Fessenden, will be featured in the second exhibit of the Galeria al Aire Libre Axixic (GALA), set to open Saturday, May 14, 5 p.m., at the town square.  The large format images-displayed in metal frames set in the garden areas around the plaza-will remain on view for about two months.

LLT Playhouse series

The Lakeside Little Theatre offers two special HD screening presentations via its affiliation with London’s Royal Opera House and the National Theatre. May 14 and 15, features the National Theatre Live’s HD screening of “Everyman,” with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the title role. One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and movement by Javier De Frutos.

May 28 and 29 the Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet’s HD screening of “Giselle,” produced by Peter Wright with music by Adolphe Adam is offered. The greatest of all Romantic ballets, Marius Petipas classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and love that transcends death.

Show times are Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday: 3 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the LLT box office Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon or one hour before curtain. Seats can be reserved at time of purchase. The Angel Terrace Bar is open one hour before show time and during intermission.

Harp Fest returns

Mark your calendar for the main event of Chapala’s 14th Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Más, to be held Wednesday, June 8 at the Centro Cultural González Gallo. The extended Harp Fest program will encompass additional performances by musicians coming from different parts of Mexico to be scheduled throughout the second week of the month at various venues, details to be announced.

Cookbook art sought

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic, (Casa) extends an invitation to lakeside artists to submit artistic proposals for the cover of the group’s 30th anniversary cookbook. The cookbook will be 7 inches wide by 9.5 inches high. All entries (only two per artist) must be submitted by Friday June 10. The Casa board will select the top three entries and the membership will vote for their favorite at the June 20 meeting of the group.
