The season of New York Met live simulcasts starts the new year with “The Pearl Fishers,” Bizet’s opera of lust and longing set in the Far East.
The opera returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint.”

Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil
The Guadalajara Youth Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Guadalajara) celebrates its tenth anniversary with a gala concert at the regal Degollado Theater. Works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Revueltas will be included in the program. Current director Juan Tucan Franco has been at the helm of the orchestra since 2009, and has worked previously as director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Nayarit, as well as an invited conductor with musical groups throughout Mexico and Latin America.

Jazz Trio
The first Alternative Wednesday concert of 2015 features “Below,” a trio comprising Alfonso Arreola (LabA, A+C, Monocordio), Michael Manring (a disciple of Jaco Pastorius) and Trey Gunn (ex King Crimson, David Sylvian, Security Project). The three acclaimed guitarists and friends will combine for an evening of jazz, progressive rock and improvisation.

Live from the Met
The New York Met live simulcasts continue with Puccini’s “Turandot.” Sopranos Christine Goerke, Lise Lindstrom and Nina Stemme take turns in the title role of the proud princess of ancient China, whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand. Tenors Marcelo Álvarez and Marco Berti are Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun dorma” and wins her love. The production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.

GR RECOMMENDS: Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) returns to the stage of the Teatro Degollado on Thursday, January 21 for the first of three belated “end of/beginning of year” concerts that showcase the majestic musical heritage of Austria.
JPO Musical Director Marco Parisotto takes the baton for a series that will serve as a prelude to the orchestra’s first season of 2016, running from January 29 through April 24 (see story page 12).
“To the Rhythm of Vienna” features waltzes and other pieces by the Strauss brothers (Johann and Eduard), Fritz Kreisler and Maurice Ravel. Rather then bringing in invited musicians, nine members of the orchestra’s violin section will perform solos during the concert. The program consists of 16 pieces:
-Johann Strauss Jr.: Overture from Die Fledermaus (The Bat); Im Krapfenwaldl Polka Franc Op. 336; “Unter Donner Und Blitz” Polka Schnell op. 324; “Wiener Blut” Walzer Op.354; The Blue Danube; Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, Op. 214.
