Calendars

Ajijic’s most popular calendars, “Our Beloved Mexico 2013,” in this 20th edition by Enrique and Belva Velazquez, are now on sale in various sites around Lakeside. The calendars, featuring reproductions of paintings by the artists and big squares to write in your most important upcoming events cost 150 pesos each. Besides using them to keep your own busy social life in order, you’ll be able to keep up with important Mexican, United States and Canadian holidays. If you don’t find them someplace else, stop at the Velazquez Gallery at 16 de Septiembre 7 in Ajijic. It’s open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

New group

A new art/artisan group is forming at Lakeside. Called Lakeside Artisan Association, the group is looking for members who are skilled at their trades or handicrafts and looking to aid those members in marketing their goods. Applications will be screened by the board of directors, Charles Freeland, Laura Dunaway, Mario and Marina Maurtua, Barbara Milagros and Tony Passorello.

Free recital

Sunday, August 12, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar, popular mezzo-soprano Kimball Wheeler will present a concert of songs by Schubert, Charles E. Ives and Richard Strauss. Sharing the spotlight will be the brilliant Spanish pianist Javier Vasquez Grela. The entrance is free but donations for the Promusicis organization will be accepted.

Storytellers

The Storytellers group is looking for new submissions of short fiction by Lakeside writers. The group is about to begin a new season of monthly readings by the authors themselves or experienced readers, that will take place at the Lake Chapala Society. Stories can be as short as 500 words. The theme for September is “Survival.” Future themes being considered are “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” “Turn It On” and “Mexican Christmas.”

The next scheduled Sunday Sing will be on Sunday, May 27, at Alicia’s Assisted Living, (Paseo del Lago 9, La Floresta). Singers are hoping to pull at least two of Alicia’s houses together so that more residents can enjoy the music.

Exhibition

Ajijic artist Cathy Chalvignac will open her studio and garden to the public on Saturday, July 28, 3 p.m. for her latest exhibition of paintings, “Transportadores del Tiempo” (Time Travelers). Besides viewing Chalvignac’s exquisite photographic-realism paintings, visitors will enjoy cocktails, music of the jazz group Acasia and the beautiful ambiance of the garden located at Calle 16 de Septiembre 22.

The Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old train station) in Chapala is hosting the Orquesta Tipica de Autlan with 40 kids and adults playing typical Mexican instruments such as marimbas, harps, percussion, brass and strings. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday, July 17, 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Ribera Arts Review – June 30, 2012

The anthem

The 36-voice primary school choir of Ajijic’s Instituto Loyola took the first place in the annual state competition for the singing of the Mexican National Anthem on June 15.

The choir made it to the state finals after having won both district and regional competitions promoted by the Jalisco Education Department (SEP).

Eight schools from all corners of Jalisco took part in the category “schools with music programs and teachers.” The moment of determining the order of performance was very emotional.

Children's art

Vern Geiger of Lakeside Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation introduces Cleopatra the Python to kids in LCS Children’s Art Program, while helping them enroll in the PROFEPA National Art Contest. The children can enter paintings and drawings of endangered animals and the environment. The LCS art program is open to all interested children and meets Saturday mornings.
