Entertainment Guide - May 2, 2014

Guadalajara’s May Cultural Festival gets underway on Thursday with a concert by U.S. jazz great Gregory Porter at the Degollado Theater.

The state of California is the invited guest at this year’s festival, which runs until the end of the month. Free nightly concerts for a more youthful crowd (La Alternativa) will be held in the huge Plaza de la Liberacion on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings throughout the festival.

Spanning age groups, however, are the California Honeydrops (above), a blues and R&B band formed in 2007 playing in the subway stations of Oakland, whose sound is tied together by their instrumentation, vocal harmonies and New Orleans style. The Honeydrops’ more unusual instruments include a home-made gutbucket bass, jug, and washboard. Their rhythms are punctuated by trumpet, piano riffs, and bluesy vocals.

The Honeydrops perform Saturday, May 10, 9:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 11, 9 p.m. in the plaza facing the Degollado.
